My husband enjoys fishing from shore near our beach condo. We would like to travel this spring....probably to Florida. In the past we have LOVED Cape San Blas (but there are no time shares) and we'd like to try somewhere else. Are we better off trying the Keys; the gulf...i.e. Captiva/Sanibel?......something on the Atlantic near St Augustine (although not a time share we liked Hammock Beach). What about the Ft Myers or Marco Island coast?....Where have you experienced great shore fishing in Florida? (PS we're from SC and Love our coastal beaches....Hilton Head, Fripp Island, Kiawah.....but right now we're looking to try Florida). If you recommend a non-timeshare area (i.e. North Captiva)…..what was the fishing like?

There are lots of fishing piers in FL. The Tampa area is great and even has a massive drive on fishing pier near the skyway bridge. West coast also has lots of mangrove areas. Cocoa beach has a huge pier with fishing rentals right on the pier. Timeshares in both areas.

The few piers we've gone to fish from usually require permits, licenses and extra fees and have lots of people just standing side by side.......which isn't really like he wants to fish......he prefers standing on the shore in the sand.....casting out as far as he can and reeling in for all the kids to see, LOL. Like I mentioned the Cape area, St George, area has wonderful spring fishing; he's also had some good days at Hilton Head & Fripp Island in South Carolina. We wanted to explore some other areas...….(where I can sit in the sand and read my book while the little ones play).

DH used to enjoy surf casting from the beach in front of our timeshare at St Augustine Beach many years ago. He caught some pretty good sized whiteing (I think they were called) as well as the odd baby shark! We still see guys surf casting but don't see their catches often. There is also a pier at the north end of St Augustine Beach where people can pay a small fee to fish from the end. There are usually lots of people there and most seem to have a few fish in their buckets.

Do you need a fishing license to fish on Naples Pier?

You do not need a license to fish from Naples Pier, since the city of Naples maintains a blanket license for the pier. If you are fishing from the beach next to the pier or anywhere from land, or if you are out in a private boat, you must have a Florida Fishing License.

THANK YOU - this is perfect!

It's been a while but shore fishing at Sanibel with 2 rods dunking sand fleas caught fish. I only keep the pomps. As soon as the sun starts going down you need to protect your skin because of the noseeums.
