DH has it in his head that he would like to go. There are no Marriott hotels or TSs there, and not even any in II. We found cruises (leaving from Liberty Park - a nicer name for Hoboken, NJ . . we live 100 miles north of NYC) but does anyone have any other suggestions for us getting there - without actually (gag!) paying for this like a normal person?

Others will chime in but I recall when I looked at this island there was not a great exchange option. The highest rated one (I forget the name) definitely had mixed reviews -- and was also a tough trade by reputation.

I've figured that if/when I make it to Bermuda I'll have to do it the old fashioned way and rent.

Which makes it loooooowwww on the list. It's funny, but I avoid hotels now.

Please let us know what you find!

Best,

Greg

Bermuda is a lovely destination combining both a European and tropical flair for a truly unique experience. I wouldn't stay away for lack of a timeshare trade.

When we visited Bermuda, we found a short-term, fully-furnished apartment rental that approximated a low-end timeshare. Although spartan, it met our needs with two bedrooms, kitchen, living room, and bathroom. Included was a pool, hot tub, and laundry facilities as well.

We spent most of our time away from the apartment visiting the gorgeous pink sand beaches and historic sites.

A word of warning: Bermuda is an easy destination for New York-based cruise ships. Sometimes you need to time your beach visits to avoid the deluge of cruise ship passengers. There is literally no spec of unoccupied sand when a cruise ship descends on a beach.

We have been to Bermuda twice, both times on a cruise. It's a gorgeous place and I would highly recommend it. Unlike other cruises that go to the Caribbean, the ship docks in Bermuda the whole time so there is no rush to get back at sunset. You can really explore the island and just use the ship as your home base.

The best part about it if you live in the Northeast is that you drive to Bayonne, park your car and climb on board and begin your vacation!

This sounds like a real possibility for us! We read descriptions on cruise sites, but hearing it on TUG makes a difference. Thank you!

Perhaps I am just not a "cruise person", but ...

Visiting Bermuda on a cruise would be my last option. I remember lamenting the plight of the cruise ship passengers I saw being herded around the island in packs. I knew they were having a completely different (and notably worse) vacation experience than we were. Perhaps it varies by cruise line, but it seems like their passenger list must have included many from the "Jersey Shore" television show - 'nuff said.

I was also a 'no cruise ship' snob but I take a yearly sister trip
She has health issues now and can't fly so by trying this we can still take a trip to a nice place
Certainly will not be herded around but think with 3 days we will be able to enjoy the island
Not interested in a cruise where only a short stop only allows a few hours and people end up going shopping

Wish us a good trip!

We took about 12 cruises before we started TS. We love a good cruise. We never take the cruise ship excursions but rather go off on our own so no herds. Our very first cruise was to Bermuda because the island is so expensive. We actually went to 2 ports on each side of the island. Itis very different from your typical Caribbean cruise as you do dock. there is a nice Holland America Cruise that spends 3.5 days in port and leaves from NY. The ship is your hotel and has all the food you could want. You only eat what you want to in Bermuda restaurants. Cruising to Bermuda is very economical and a fun vacation. The island is lovely. Go in the summer..it is not tropical.
I miss cruising

Have fun pharmgirl, wish I was going back!

We have visited Bermuda twice, flown both times and stayed one time in a hotel (a number of years ago there was a Marriott hotel there) and another at a guest house that had individual apartment units & a pool.
Dining in Bermuda is very expensive. Getting around does require some planning as you are unable to rent a vehicle. You can take a taxi or use their bus & ferry system (or rent a scooter....which we didn't do as the roads can be narrow and winding and you're sharing the road with buses).
We now have children and I would love to visit again and take our kids. I've looked at various options and the best priced one is to take a cruise from the N.E. U.S. and like the other poster said, use it as a hotel for the duration of your time on the island.
The standard of living for residents is higher than islands in the Caribbean.....you won't find a shanty town here, or at least not when we travelled there a few years ago.
The timeshare resort likely being referred to is the St. George's Club, located in St. George at the eastern end of the island, if memory serves correctly.
I would go again in a heartbeat.

We have been to Bermuda only once and it was on a cruise. I would be reluctant to go any other way. We will be cruising to Bermuda again in the spring.

I have posted some pictures from our last cruise in November on Flickr. It will give you a feeling for the place. I am an avid gardener so the flowers and plants feature prominently in the photos!

I recommend that you buy a three day pass for the public transportation. It is good for the ferry and the bus. It was very convenient and we got to see the whole island by using the system that the locals do. No herding involved!

We enjoyed visiting the botanical gardens very much. An unexpected treat was doing a tour of Lili Bermuda, which is a perfume factory in St George's. I bought what they call a fragrance library which has a small sample of each of their perfumes. Every time I open a new bottle, a wonderful fragrance transports me back to that beautiful place...

Long ago we spend a couple weeks there on our honeymoon....stayed in a guest house which was great. Small pool, little "kitchen" (good for breakfast mainly). Even back then it was expensive eating and I have to say Bermuda was (perhaps still is) by far the most "formal" tropical island I've been on. No
other island I've been on did most men wear a jacket to dinner (at the nice places....not everywhere). It's a great place to go.

We traded into the St. George club in I think 2004. I LOVED it! Wonderful place, wonderful people, etc. What everybody said about the island I would agree with. I believe I traded a Maui Lea week for it and we went in March, which is a bit chilly for swimming and the beach, but not for sightseeing. Food was very high indeed!

Although not quite Marriott standards, the St George Club looks very nice. Redweek has a number of photos. I will look for a trade or rental at St George Club the next time we contemplate a trip to Bermuda.

Browsing through RCI recently, I noticed they had some Extra Vacations for the St. George's Club at very reasonable prices. We own a week in May, but I just picked up an extra vacation week for October - Bermuda is such an easy trip from the NY/NJ/PA area - 1 1/2 hour flight, 15 minute cab ride to the Club and you can be sipping a drink poolside by mid-afternoon.

What's best time to go? Ie warm enough for swimming outside pool/ocean

We have been to Bermuda 5-6 times - mostly May and October, once in September. Each time the weather was perfect - warm and sunny for beach and pool. For swimming purposes, I wouldn't go much before May or after late October/early November. For touring around, I think starting in March would be fine, and I've heard its nice even in December, but not for beach activities. I understand The St. Georges Club closes in January for maintenance, since its really not the time to vacation in Bermuda temperature wise. Hope this helps.
