We just returned from a timeshare exchange in Myrtle Beach. Can anyone suggest other beaches on the East Coast to me? We really had a good time but would like to go somewhere else next year.

That's going to be a long list.

Here is a start:

  • Outer Banks, NC
  • Hilton Head Island, SC
  • Sanibel or Captiva Islands, FL

There is a real coral reef (snorkeling) a 1/4 mile off shore. The Everglades is a 1.5 hr drive. World class dining. Live music. South Beach for a day trip. Golfing. Intercoastal waterways (yacht haven and waterfront homes). Fishing charters, for just about everything.

Is Ocean City like Myrtle Beach with many things for kids to do? Someone in Myrtle Beach said Virginia Beach was nice also. Are there any nice timeshare resorts in that area? Also, are there nice beach areas in Hilton Head? I have heard that it is really a place to golf and not so much to do for kids.

Ocean City NJ is a lot quieter than Myrtle Beach. A lot less dining options, but a very nice beach. Some things for the kids to do, but again, no where near as much as Myrtle Beach. About an hour drive will get you to Philadelphia which has a lot to offer.

Ocean City MD would offer a little more for the kids and a lot more dining options close by. Nicer, cleaner beaches the NJ IMO.

I live in NJ and use the beaches for convenience more than anything. IMO, the best beach in NJ for kids is Wildwood. Many more rides, waterparks, etc. Also, less expensive for a week long stay.

And being from NJ, I still try to make it to Myrtle Beach twice a year. Once for a golf vacation and once for a family vacation. I love that town.

Ocean City is so fun for the kids. It's a nice, family town. It's DRY. You can go a short distance to restaurants with alcohol - and of course you can have alcohol in your room - but it's nice that there aren't drunken kids on the boardwalk. Ocean city has fun amusement parks, miniature golf, water parks, etc.

Rachel - we are looking at MB how old are your kids? I was under the assumption HH was the kid friendly area? Sorry but I have not been to either and since you just got back was interested in your thoughts.

We had a really good time in Myrtle Beach. The kids are 10 and 3. At night walking along the main area of Myrtle Beach there are a lot of drunken kids and a very large police presence. I did not care for that part at all. The best place to go in the evenings is Broadway at the Beach. Not like that at all. I would not walk along the main area of Myrtle Beach in the evening again. The beach is very nice although I liked Surfside Beach much better. It is only a few miles south of Myrtle Beach. We have thought about going to the Outer Banks next year. Does anyone know if this is a good area to go with kids in terms of things to do besides the beach?

we live on East Coast--we prefer Hilton Head

been to Outer Banks (OBX) many times. There has been a lot of erosion over the years, so the beach area is very short and then it drops off quickly. There is frequently an undertow and rough surf. We tried MB and found it as you did. Hilton Head has the same type of beaches as MB--wide, nice sand, but it is a very upscale resort area. Besides beach stuff, many rent bikes (it's the thing to do) and tour the island. There are also boat tours, crabbing day trips, 1/2 day fishing trips, etc. We enjoy going to Harbor town and walking around, climbing the lighthouse and putt-putt. There are fireworks 2X a week on the island in the summer.
We also really like VA Beach--but you need to be at one end or the other--in the middle is similar to MB--teens, etc. Turtle Cay is a very nice resort that trades with II. Decent beach (not as wide as MB or HHI), and surf is rougher and water will be colder (but warmer that CA). Va Beach has made a BIG effort the past years to "clean up" and police rowdy teens more. Va Beach has a Baordwalk all along it, and you can bike, roller blade, walk, etc. You are 1 hr from Williamsburg and could do Busch Gardens, Water Country, and, of course, Colonial Wllmbg and Jamestown.

We strongly prefer North Myrtle Beach over MB - wider and nicer beach, more family-oriented, less traffic and newer resorts. Still a short drive to all the MB entertainment and shopping but a much better beachfront resort area. It's easy to avoid all the hubbub of MB when staying in NMB so it works well for us. So much variety of things to do nearby.

Hilton Head SC is lovely, completely different, more green and it has wide, flat, packed-sand beaches. If your kids like the beach, pools, bicycling, sea kayaking, dolphin watch boat rides, horseback riding and nature walks, they'll enjoy HHI. There's plenty of golf, tennis, shopping and restauarants for the adults too, of course.

Edisto Island SC is supposedly quieter with pebbly beaches, good for quiet walks, boating and golf.

Isle of Palms SC is just minutes from Charleston - a golf community near nice beaches and perfect for daytrips into wonderful Charleston and surrounding plantations.

Virginia Beach has a long and bustling beachfront tourist district. We've visited several times from Williamsburg, an hour away. But the kids liked the whole t-shirt and shell shops kitsch of the area, along with the very wide beach. It's not my thing as I like quieter beaches.

Outer Banks NC has rougher beaches, steeper with a serious undertow at times. Not really a kid-friendly beach area, IMO, but terrific for sightseeing, walking, and teens/adults who like the beach. Gorgeous national seashore.

Haven't been to Jekyll's Island in GA since I was a little kid. Some people love it there though skeeters can be powerful in the height of summer.

And then there's Florida... :)

I have had some people tell me about Tybee Island in Ga. Anyone have any input on this area? I understand it is very nice.
