Just a reminder to all to be careful. Someone is advertising 11 (??) days at MKO in a 1BR for $1,200 total (posts were removed.) Yes, this a last minute rental, but being 11 days it must be a points reservation (if real), so who would take $1,200 for that (about 5,000 points if worst view. )

Also, they said just send $600 now and pay the balance after you check in.

The poster also has like no history on TUG either.

Yes, please do your due diligence - I have deleted a lot of Ads from newbies in the last few days. If it is too good to be true - IT IS NOT TRUE!

Thank you to all the mods that act so quickly on all this scam/spam!

It’s exhausting…scammers coming at us on all fronts. I got taken by a duct cleaning scam that infiltrated our HOA private FB group. CC denied my claim so far. Trying to appeal.

One of neighbors, one of the most intelligent people I know, who is not elderly, fell for this, as did many others. I laughed when these clowns showed up at our door with a wet vac. Why can't people say no?

What happened here, did you file other reports...BBB, AG, Elliot, even police report the more reports filed the better, you can then show reports to cc to refile dispute

scammers will never stop trying to scam people because the scams still work on so many!

do not rely on someone else protecting you, always always always take steps to verify and protect yourself before any money changes hands.

I will get on that. Thanks for reminder to do so.

This sounds like the same scam I fell for. What is it about $600.00? I would think they would try a new scam?

Just curious... how do you know if someone is a scammer vs just a legit user posting a last minute rental for the first time?

I have rented from people on this board, but to be fair... I was kinda nervous about it, because you don't really know if it is legit until you check in.

For starters, I would only rent to/from someone who has a posting history here that is clearly legit. Too many one and done posters/people that have just signed up and offering rentals all over the place. This might exclude some legit renters, but better safe than sorry.

Last time I rented the gal had me sign up for a business account on PayPal that somehow protected her purchase.

I am pretty sure I could make the reservation, send the confirmation, let them contact the timeshare directly with any questions, then collect? …if payment didn’t come through I’d cancel it? Definitely helpful we can check out tug membership and history here…

I’m not thrilled with having a company hold the money…any feedback from others who have rented on how to assure the renter?

Have delved into Redweek and koala with no luck maybe because I didn’t feel comfortable allowing cancellation…I have friends and family who would like to rent weeks but I don’t see any practical way to do it. Last Worldmark update I attended they said you can rent your weeks? Is this true?

Wonder if there's a verification system we could implement in the board to help do that first level of verification. Obviously not the only protection you should do but could be a good start.

Scammers tend to not want to be verified.

It is unfortunate but I no longer trust renting here on TUG from either side... not for renting out my unit nor renting someone else's unit. Too many scammers these days. :( I will only rent through sites that serve as intermediaries to handle and guarantee the transaction. I really wish it didn't have to be that way.
