On the periphery of my awareness for the last several years has been something called "Banana Ball"
The 10-year-old Little Leager told me yesterday we had to watch some reruns of The Savanah Bananas on You Tube
OK, why
He said the team had some great athletes and they were fun to watch
I like MLB Baseball, but fun to watch has never been a description I have used

They were hilarious and fast paced
If you haven't checked them out, highlights can be found all over free streaming media
I highly recommend them for a change a pace

I saw a news story on banana ball a few months ago and was charmed. I have no interest in ever watching a baseball game, but I could watch a game of banana ball. Ditto basketball, but I would watch the Harlem Globetrotters.

They sold out Great America Ballpark both nights they were here in Cincinnati recently. I read that they are sold out for the next two years everywhere they play. Although I haven't seen them play, friends said they are very entertaining and family friendly.

My Daughter bought tickets for when they come here in Aug. I had not heard of it, but there was something similar on King of the Hill back in the day with Softball.

they stream some of the games live on disney...its great!

like a combination of WWE and MLB

I agree, Banana Ball is a hoot. Makai Gal and I had tickets for a game in Lexington SC (near Columbia) a couple of years ago. We even bought tee shirts online for the occasion. Sadly, when it came time to go we had a gully washer where we could barely see to the end of our driveway, let alone drive the 50 minutes or so to Lexington, so the tix went to waste.

I get a kick out of watching them on the tube once in a while, but one game a season is plently.

It does seem to be popular. I've seen a few clips and it doesn't really appeal to me. It is more entertainment than sport and seems to be more the cool thing to go and see. I wonder if it can be sustainable long term.

I met a guy while working out at the Planet Fitness in Hilton Head who had just started playing for the Bananas. He had played minor league ball and loved playing for them. He said they trained really hard, but have a lot of fun. I particularly like the pitcher who throws while on stilts.

read somewhere that all the players were college or pro athletes and all have some sort of significant social media platform/presence to get picked for the teams! explains how they are all very comfortable doing the extremely silly things they all do during the games!

I have watched some of their clips online, and they look fun. They came to my area last year, but I was not able to make the game. I enjoy regular baseball and think the bananas would be fun to see in person.

As noted above it is basically the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball. Just like the HG are not really playing basketball, BB is not really baseball. It even has lots of crazy rules (like if a fan catches a foul ball it is an out.) Probably more directed at young kids. Though the HG have been pretty sustainable. I watched a game and it was funny. Not really sport, and probably couldn't watch again, but the kids do love it.

On Sunday July 27, the TV schedule shows Banana Ball at 1:00 PM on our local CW station. It may be on in your area too.

I'm now watching Banana Ball on ESPN, definitely a fast paced 'entertaining" version of baseball
I like the rule where if a foul ball is caught by a fan the player is out o_O

I’m watching it also
Frankly not a big tv sport person
But this is great

In watching the 60 Minutes segment on Banana Ball, the owners were focused on fan (audience) engagement. They tweaked the rules to keep the fans entertained and in their seats for the entire game.

Like professional wrestling, these are athletes providing entertainment with feats of skill, but it is not a competition.

"In recent years, the Bananas have become an inescapable phenomenon, a traveling revue that mixes the charm of old vaudeville, the creativity of the Harlem Globetrotters and the fan loyalty of the Grateful Dead.

"Banana Ball fixates on fan experience above anything else. This means the baseball goes quickly. Meanwhile, the umpires dance. The outfielders do back flips while catching fly balls. There’s a Banana who’s shockingly good at pitching and hitting on very tall stilts.

"The best innovation: If a fan catches a foul ball, it’s recorded as an out.

"Savannah Bananas club owner Jesse Cole says “I learned from Saturday Night Live. I learned from Cirque de Soleil. I learned from WWE. I learned from Taylor Swift. I learned from Mr. Beast.

I watched this on TV, and they have some interesting rules, that favor the home team, that do make the game fun to watch. Some of it I found really stupid, but I am not a Tik Toker and that seemed to be what they were going for. It felt more like an All-Star game with good players, than a drubbing type game like the Globetrotters. Both teams had a chance to win, but the home team has the advantage. It would have been better if it wasn't raining and they hadn't had to call the game early.
