Is it relatively automatic to get whatever week at whatever resort so long as you have enough points? I'm especially interested in knowing if I can book mountain or copper seasons to use up points for a year and trade on II.

... my thought was to reserve the mountain time week through Hyatt then offer to exchange it on II. I think you're saying that no one will take that week, even if I plan a year out?

I am going to assume that you are new to Hyatt??? What travelhacker is trying to tell you is that you do not need to book a reservation to trade with II. With the Hyatt program, you only use your points to trade in II. You do not deposit any reservations. When you receive a week from Interval, points are automatically deducted from you Hyatt account.
As mentioned Hyatt II reservations are purely points. So you cannot book a studio and hope to upgrade - the interval reservation always costs what the Hyatt interval chart says are the points required per unit size. Hyatt does get a lot for the points within interval.
Kal's site is very helpful - here is his link to the II points chart but there is plenty to learn about Hyatt on his site.
The link provided by @GTLINZ is helpful and the first time I've seen it. I did think you had to book a week (even if through II) in order to exchange it for a non-Hyatt property.
