ATM in Germany and Austria

Four digit pin numbers are required at most ATMs in Europe.
I've used ATMs in both of those countries with no problems using my normal four digit pin.

Just got back.......we were at a timeshare in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany) in August. Wandered all over the Bavarian Alps, into Salzburg Austria, up to Munich, down into the Austrian Alps.
No problems with ATM's at all. Our 4 digit password worked fine.
But be forewarned......credit cards are not as widely accepted as in other countries. In the Alps region especially (and maybe it's because so many restaurants are family run) I would estimate that 80% of the restaurants we went to did not accept credit cards. Cash only.
Also....and you will laugh at this.....we tried one night to find an ATM.....finally found one at a bank but it was inside the doors in the foyer. No big deal. We pulled and pulled and pulled on the doors! It was locked! Oh no! We knew we needed cash for dinner. Dragged the kids all over town, 20 minutes of tromping around before we found another and got the cash we needed. After dinner as we went back to our car (we had parked right in front of the bank with the ATM) we saw someone come out of the building after using the ATM that had formerly been locked in the building! And THEN we realized.....the door didn't open out like in the USA (apparently that "Pull" is very ingrained on us) but opened in! Because it was a very heavy glass bank door, it wasn't at all obvious when we tried to pull on the door to open it that we should have been pushing. And 5 members of our family all tugged on the door and peered inside and none of us ever thought to push! After that we realized that many doors in Germany are like that........opening "in" rather than "out". So don't be fooled by "locked" bank doors!
