@klpca It's always interesting to me to read on TUG the differing viewpoints, perceptions & experiences on this topic given that we live all over the place. We still have yellow police tape on playgrounds as an example and I feel like I'm living trapped in a cage.

@bbodb1 The restrictions on the gyms and masks are interesting to me as I consider myself to be a gym junkie. I'm glad they are not required for people "actively exercising". I can say without hesitation that I would quit any gym that required a mask while exercising.....despite the "high risk" of that environment. I belong to 2 gyms. One of the two is strictly class based. We are limited to 6 in a class now (normally it's maxxed at 24). We are assigned a little taped in area on the floor during class with all of our equipment within that perimeter that is "ours" for the class. So no stepping in /out of our taped area. It's a strange new other world. The coach stands in his / her area, like a penalty box in hockey.

How do you square that with people who don't have that choice? Those people deserve to have their needs be part of the conversation.

I can only assume you're referring to the men and women working the front lines of this and I would say, without any doubt whatsoever.

I believe each and every one of these brave individuals understand the sacrifices they make, as well as the chances they take. They chose their professions knowing the risks each day brings them and yet, still do it. They above all know their health and well being lies in their hands and will try to do everything they can to protect it. They know better than us just how to do that and they trust one person, above all others to do that, themselves.

As for those they come into contact with each day, they're fully aware that there are both good people and bad people. People who care about others and so many that don't. What they also know, understand and have come to terms with is, nothing they say or do will change those that don't wish to change. Those who have little, if any concern, about the well being of anyone other than themselves.

Sadly, It's always been that way, is now, and will be that way when all of us are long gone.

Same for us. Even at that, take-out will be on a nearly emergency basis only.
When the shut down started we wanted to support the local businesses and restaurants. So we started doing take out. We usually do at least two dinners and one breakfast each week. Some weeks we do lunch as well. We also tip more than we would for dine in.

The gym I go to opened up on Monday. I have no plans to go back in the near future. They require you to wear a mask when you enter, but not when you are exercising. That's good, because I cannot exercise wearing a mask. However, I do not want to be in an environment with other people who are sweating, coughing, drooling (yes some people do when working out) and whatever else if they are not masked. So, I won't go back. I'll continue to workout at the park with my trainer. When the weather isn't good enough to do that I will probably just exercise at home until I feel more comfortable about the gym.

Currently there are no classes allowed in New Mexico.

I thought this was interesting because in one of the Hawaii threads, someone commented that it seemed like there was high compliance re: mask wearing in So Cal. I guess not.

VA and NC had very similar case counts for most of April and May (excluding the nearest DC areas, where their count was higher.) We "re-opened" around the same time. They instituted a mandatory mask requirement at the end of May. Now, NC has *way higher* case rates and hospitalization rates (really, a much more crucial stat to track) than VA. That's a pretty compelling difference.

People were predicting that the mass protests would mean case spikes, but, as it has been two plus weeks since the first protests, that's not come to fruition. Researchers have examined the footage and determined that the high percentage of mask wearing + being outside were high mitigating factors against spread.

It seems the US chose the "worst of all worlds" scenarios--high economic disruption and a high morbidity rate. *sigh*
I would say that our area has a high population wearing masks. Just not doing that great with social distancing in the places that I mentioned. People are people and they are going to do what they are going to do. I will do whatever I need to do to help others stay safe. I'm not a big fan of my mask but I don't leave home without it. It's the right thing to do.

Me either! The gym will be the last place I go. We are blessed with beautiful weather and a lot of open space. Plenty of places to exercise. Plus there's the crazy climbing wall in my garage lol.

I'm lucky in that my trainer, who has gone back to the gym, is still willing to work at the park with her clients who don't feel comfortable going back to the gym. She told me that since we were the ones who stuck with her during the shut down she's going to do what we want.

It makes me sad, because I really enjoyed going to the gym and liked how I felt afterwards, but I'm not comfortable with the environment.

On a similar topic, California is now mandating wearing a mask. Check your news source for the info.

I saw that, and am happy about it. In San Jose Ca where i live, mask wearing is prevalent. People without masks are the exception..

I agree completely. I feel like we were all complaining at the beginning that the shutdowns were necessary because to think about economics made one feel like an evil person and that you were choosing money over lives. Since the beginning, I have posed these questions because I was concerned about what would happen when the shutdowns ended. Now I am feeling anxious and worried that we are reopening with such inconsistent messages and broad non-compliance to the safety guidelines. I am really worried that the USA never completed Phase 1 and now we lost 3-4 months of time that we could have used to design a sustainable long term solution. My DH and I are mainly acting like we are still in SIP because we got used to it. We need to start our own re-opening and get back into the world with social distancing and masks. But I am worried that many other people are acting like things are back to normal and ignoring all safety precautions. I am really disturbed that the President is having a campaign rally soon. What message does that send?

Good, I am in California. Glad mask wearing is now mandatory. We need a clear message and clear mandates since people do not seem to be following them as SIP was lifted.

Since March, we have not eaten out or done take out. We started cooking at home and got used to it so we have continued. When SIP started to lift, we spoke about dining out but never did it. About 2 weeks ago, we did take out pizza. That is the closest we got to eating restaurant food. I am feeling guilty that we are not supporting our local restaurants.

I agree completely. I have never been pro-mask but I wear it whenever I leave home to help others feel comfortable and because it is the right thing to do.

For me take out is for maybe a pizza or a burger, or Chinese food like it always has been mostly in normal times, but I am not spending good money for fancy meals to take out.

Have eaten outside at restaurants 3 times. I also have no qualms eating inside one either.

Yesterday had lunch with a 70 year old friend. She came into my home and into my car. No masks. We walked over from the parking lot to the restaurant and actually sat in a gazebo like dining area off the lake. Was a marine yacht club beach bar place. I forgot my mask in the car and the host said no problem and walked us over to the table- they were set up 6 ft apart. Staff wore masks. Had regular laminated menus.

Was very enjoyable to be out and be served.

Last week my husband and I had outdoor dining. They had us wear masks walking to our table. Then we could remove our masks. They had iPads for menus on their website. Again- a lovely time.

This weekend we are going for 2 days to our timeshare resort for a 2 night stay ( can’t wait to swim in the pool!) I won and we will be eating out all three meals. We maybe will get take out once but the rest will be out.

As an aside, our son came to visit on his lunch break today ( yes- he was finally called back to work. No masks required there he said. They sit far apart anyway now that they are in a bigger, new building).

He has not been here in a few months since we told him it was better to stay apart. But now we are over that and we all did not wear masks in our house when he was here and we did not wipe down the door handle or chair he sat on. I am just not doing that any longer. Even when my friend came yesterday I did not.

I hugged my son for the first time in a long time. We kept our faces from each other but I needed to hug him.

I know our son had been out and about at breweries, plus working in a restaurant/ brewery and, of course, now back at his full time job. We also are out with friends walking and on a pontoon boat and going to stores and talking with neighbors and going to the beach. We are living.

We wear masks inside buildings and we wash our hands and do our best.

Colorado only has a state-wide "recommendation" for masks, but our county has had an order in place for the past month to wear masks inside any business / public building. At restaurants, you need to wear a mask anytime you are not at your table (which are spaced out). I would say that there is at least 90% compliance around here. No surprise that our county's CV-19 rates are much lower than all surrounding counties. In fact, we are one of the lowest in the state.

To me, wearing a mask just makes sense, and I have no issues wearing one.
