At Ko Olina now...ahhhhh

The farmer's market on Mondays is fantastic! There is always a line at opening, so get there early to get the best produce.

If you were walking along the lagoons at about 3pm Tuesday, I might have passed you. I was wandering around the area about that time. (Staying at Waikiki, but wanted to take a look at Aulani.)

In case anyone is wondering what the building in image 9397 is, that's the temporary room models. They said the models will move to the main building in January, and the temporay model site will be removed and replaced with a wedding pavilion.

Thanks John, I did wonder about that. When will it open? I didn't see any public access to it at this time.

And we must have just missed each other. My last photo as I returned to our condo was at 2:32pm.

Don't know the name of the road the little fruit stand is on, but it is on the left as you come in to Koloa, before you get to town.

When we were staying at a condo for two weeks several years ago, there was a fruit and vegetable stand on the left if heading away from Poipu Road on Ala Kinoiki Road. It was just after making a left turn off of Poipu Road. We had traveled eastbound on Poipu Road and made the left on Ala Kinoiki. The stand was not very far after the turn-off on the left. If you come from the other end of Ala Kinoiki Road toward Poipu Road, after you make the left onto Ala Kinoiki road from Maluhia Road (prior to getting to Koloa), it would be on the right just prior to the intersection with Poipu Road. I have not been there in a few years. So, I don't know if the stand is still there or not. I never knew there were so many varieties of pineapple until we began trying to decide which varieties of pineapple to buy.

On Oahu, we went to the Sunshine market at Haleiwa, (Sunday mornings) but it could not compare to the fabulous leis, fruit, vegetables, (especially the giant avocados and pink ginger) & flower arrangements at Koloa and at Lihue. Hanalei had a smaller, but lovely market as well. We always get our papayas and lots of other gorgeous stuff at those markets, but while we were waiting for the official opening time, two of the local ladies confided to me that they never buy pineapples there, they always go to Costco!

Actually, this does not necessarily surprise me. I love the fruit I get at our local Costos. So, if they had great locally-grown pineapples in Hawaii, it would not be unexpected. Of course, being Costo, they might ship the pineapples in from the far east also rather than buying them locally grown if they could save a few bucks.

In theory, the locally grown produce should taste better because it is picked when ripe rather than unripe for shipping. It may be my imagination, but the Kona coffee always tastes better when getting it locally grown from the Kona area. I still order coffee from several of the coffee farms around the Mauna Loa and Kona area. Most of them will sell their beans via the Internet.

Steve - Love the photo's - My husband isn't really excited about the prospect of going to Oahu in general - these will perk him up a bit.
Aloha- Babs

At the Kauai Costco, they were from Maui. Can't remember where the Oahu pineapples at the Kapolei Costco were from, but probably Maui. My husband is retired Air Force, so I think we bought pineapples at the commissary last year on our way in from the airport, and they were Hawaiian. We were checking everything because lots of the fish was not local. The little fish shop in Koloa had the best fresh fish we found on Kauai, also on the close edge of Hanalei the Hanalei Dolphin had all local fresh fish in a little shop behind the restaurant.

He had the best time grilling pineapple and steaks etc at Ko Olina because there was always a great group of (mostly) guys there, and the view from the grills at Hale Naia was gorgeous.

We'll be at Waiohai and Kauai Lagoons next month. Can't wait! Wish we could go to Ko Olina too!

It opens August 29, 2011. (all the amenities will be open, and all exterior construction will be completed. But interior finishing is expected to continue on some sections beyond that date.)

To see the models, you have to go across the street to the office on the 2nd floor of the marketplace building. They drive you over in a golf cart to see the models.

Ko'Olina

Steve,

We are checking in at Ko'Olina tomorrow - yay. We'd be ever so grateful for any kitchen staples - coolers - whatever - that you'd like to leave behind for a fellow Hawaii lover. We'll do the same when we leave on the 26th.

Aloha!

We often leave stuff behind. Sometimes asking other if they want it or just placing it outside our door. One time we had an almost full bottle of Tide and an unopened case of bottled water that we just sat outside our villa door with a FREE note on it. When we woke up on checkout day, they were magically gone :) .

Ordinarily I would love to oblige, but we are going to north shore for 3 days when we leave here so will be needing all the 'extras' we now have.

Great pictures! Thank you for taking so many of Aulani. It looks massive! I can hardly wait for it to open. We would like to stay there for 3 days pre or post Maui in 2012. Ko Olina looks very nice. It is maturing nicely. You have a wonderful view over the pool, then on to the ocean. Especially loved the moon shot. Last year we arrived late at Frenchman's Cove. The girl checking us in led us to the balcony off the check-in area and we all gasped at the incredibly beautiful full moon over the ocean. It looked like a painting. Your picture reminded me of that. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you anyway! Have fun up there.
Aloha - Babs

!

Actually that is one of the reasons I wanted to switch from KBC to Waiohai. When we were at Ko Olina in Feb in Hale Nai my group and I really enjoyed using the grills (and the hot tub right there). Always met someone new and enjoyed sharing our delacacies. Heck. We even took our blender down with some ice and did our own lava flows right there at the grill (it was equiped with a plug). Really good time if you are outgoing.
