This is an excerpt from the latest review on Trip Advisor about the Surf Club beach:

>>>"With some preconceived expectations of beautiful white beaches and crystal clear Caribbean waters, the Surf Club beach was our biggest disappointment. Murky and mucky, the water was not at all tolerable. Day after day we watched new arrivals gleefully race to the sea only to turn away in disgust when their feet hit the squishy bottom and the awful odor of decaying seaweed in the stagnant waters. While we found much more swimable beaches to the south near the Hyatt and the yet to be completed Riu, walking there was somewhat of an inconvenience."<<<

We have been seriously considering renting a villa at the Surf Club (since getting an exchange seems impossible), and don't know if we want to pay big bucks to rent if the beach is that bad.

For those who have been in the water there, is it really this bad?

Thanks for the help!

This appears to be a problem certain time of the year for a short period of time. I believe it occurs early in the year when there is offshore storm activity. We go in May every year and have yet to experience any of these problems. The beaches and water are always beautiful.

I was there last August and there was no problem with the beach or the water. It was exactly what you would expect in the Caribbean - white beaches and clear turquoise water. And certainly no "odor".

They are also in the process of moving the sea wall in front of the Surf Club to expand the swimming area.

I imagine that the poster was referring to a seaweed problem which appeared briefly on Palm Beach a few weeks ago. When we were there in January the water was beautiful and once the sea wall is moved there should be a nice-sized swimming area.

Thanks Everyone!

I am glad to hear it was a temporary situation. I think we will go ahead and rent the villa. We will be there week 1, 2008. Something to look forward to next winter!
