My understanding is that due to the storm the water off the beach smells and there is a vast amount of seaweed on the bottom which is creating the smell. Does anyone have any info on this and Marriotts plans to clean it up to solve the problem?

My family and I are leaving in 20 days - headed to the Surf Club. I am so sad that the beach is smelly and the water cloudy.:bawl: :bawl: I was so looking forward to walking down to the beach and doing nothing but enjoy the beautiful blue water. My children have never seen blue ocean water. I guess we will rent a car and check out other beaches. It's a shame we won't be able to enjoy the one right outside our door.

ok near by

We were at surf club 10-18 to 25 and the water did smell and a lot of seaweed floating in the water. We found though that this is primarily around the Marriotts and not so when you walked down toward the Hilton or Holiday Inn etc. So no need to drive to see blue water just walk 200 feet. The beach infront of the Surf is still beautiful and clean. Enjoy Aruba, we did.

From all the info. I read I think that was also due to another storm and friends told me it was fine afterward.

The primary problem with the Surf Club water is the relocation of the marina. Until recently, a marina occupied that area. Now its mud and muck. It doesn't feel like sand. A storm may have stirred up the bottom releasing some rotten vegetation, but they really need to dredge-dredge-dredge.

I'm here at the Surf Club now. We've been here since the 11/1. The ocean does have a smell to it, but I only noticed it once you get in the water. So if you are going to sit by the ocean and sun bathe, then you won't smell it. Of course you'll want to go in, but it honestly isn't that bad. I seemed to only smell it when a boat woud go by really close and the waves would start to roll in. There are tons of people in there every day, so it isn't that bad.

Two weeks ago was the annual meeting. I've been told that Marriott has finally contracted a company to come in and dredge the ocean bottom in front of the surf club. They are paying for this, as it has never been good. I've got no idea when that will happen. If I find out, I'll post it. I was also told that the MF's are going to be about $1250. About a 20% increase over last year. Ouch!! I was told this by someone who is still here that went to the meeting. Again, if I hear different, I will post.

I believe there was also a assessment on the MF's last year for renovations which was to continue as to spread them out for the 5 year renovations. The 2008 replacement reserve was $147.72 and the MF's were $911.28. I paid a total of $2118.00 for two 2BR OS villas. A 20% jump in Mf's would be $1093 + $147 (reserve)=$1240 per unit. My strategy has been to rent out one of the weeks to pay for costs which are about $2500 for both villas. I think that I am pretty close to that line of breaking even with renting out the villa to meet my costs. At this point I am guessing and probably will not know to the end of the month what the real figures are. My bottom line is my wife and I like and enjoy Aruba very much. Marriott has a great product and as much as I do not like the increase I can understand their (Marriott) reasoning for increasing fees. I would rather get hit with a small assessment oppose to one large one.

Getting back to the original question about the SC beach area, it's never been great - but we have always just walked the 50-100 feet over to the OC beach area to go in the water and it's been fine. I have heard the OC area is a little dicey at the moment, too - so you might have to go an extra 50 feet towards the hotel. Not a huge deal.

Yes if I recall from even 2 years ago the beach towards the Marriott hotel and beyond is nicer than by the Surf/Ocean Clubs. You could also venture the other way and if you are renting a car (and I recommend it) you should ABSOLUTELY drive to Eagle Beach (low rise area) and spend at least a day at that beach. I remember jogging down to Eagle Beach and realizing its much nicer than Palm Beach. JMHO!

Yeah thanks for your help this will be our 3rd trip to Aruba. Have stayed at the Ocean Club as well as Amesterdam Manor and I would surely give Eagle Beach the higher praise.

A point that no one has brought up yet is that the "Marriott" beach areas are family friendly beaches and do not allow (to the best of my knowledge) European style sunbathing (eg topless) like many of the other beach areas especially near all of the other hotels/TS on the island, including the Holiday Inn next door. It is my understanding that all Aruba beaches are public and not subject to any type of modesty codes, but the Marriott beach areas has always been family friendly in each of the years we have visited. While this may not be a problem for many adults, it may be a problem for those with children. FWIW.

You know I am seriously going to have to think about whether or not I intend on keeping my Surf Club week. We got a really good price for a 2BR Oceanside Gold but with airfares running $500-800 to Aruba and the ongoing beach issues I really have to consider selling...especially if I can still get a decent price for the unit!

I really enjoy timesharing with Marriott/II but perhaps it makes sense to sell Aruba and buy a Platinum week at a closer resort (Seaview or Manor Club) that I can drive to. As long as the unit is a lockoff (like Aruba) and would trade as well as my Gold Aruba unit. We have not been to Aruba in a couple of years and really with airfare so high its unlikely we will be back soon. That being said the Aruba unit has given us an annual AC and also trades well.

I would think that maintenance fees would be comparable for Aruba and Seaview/Manor Club correct? What do you guys think of Gold Aruba vs. Plat Manor Club or Plat. Seaview in terms of trading power and AC's? How about resale purchase price?

Sorry to hijack the thread but the main concern is the beach situation not getting better for the next few years!

There is another thread going right now about MF's. But for the upcoming bills between surf club and seaview, surf club is $350 more. Seaview platinum has been a very strong trader for me.

Seaview Marriott

does not have a lock off option. They are all 2 bedroom units. This was the case in Nov. 2006.

If Seaview does not have lockoffs I would not be interested. I am pretty sure Manor Club Sequel (and not the original) has lockoffs so perhaps that would be better for us.

is seaview in the usa

Hi
I own at Ocean club and I know they have seaweed now because of the hurricane but I go there every year and never experienced it. The water has always been beautiful. Just curious, how you can compare the carribbean water to the water we have here. There really is no comparison. I love that blue water in Aruba.

Marc- airfares have actually come down quite a bit and are back at the levels they were 2 years ago for the winter months at least. JetBlue has added flights and I think that has impacted the fares.

I know for the beg. of February the flights had gotten crazy price-wise and I started getting nervous so I bought at ~$555pp when JetBlue first released their fares, because Delta was already in the mid-700's. Now the JetBlue flights are $445pp and Delta a few dollars more. American is still a bit higher; not sure about Continental out of Newark.

JetBlue, btw, is really good about giving credits when their flights decrease in price. First time booking with them so that was nice to see.

We recently purchased AA flights from IAD-AUA for June 2009. $146 each way plus taxes. Great prices.

A little off topic- but does anyone have the current e-mail info. for room requests?

Thanks

I am not sure why you would think your question is off topic? I started by asking about the beach area at the Surf Club in Aruba and so far the topics of Airfare, MF's, other Marriott lock off units, have all been discussed. Your question about email addresses seem the logical next step.

Sorry for the sarcasim.
