Are points points?

Newbie investigating options. Mainly intersted in points buying because we'll need flexibility in time and place. I've been looking closest at Wyndham.

I do think over time we will likely go to resorts close to us more often just because they'll be more convenient. I live in middle TN so this would probably be the Smoky Mountains or Destin. Our prime vacation time is usually spring and fall breaks in early April and October.

Question, in my situation are points points? Is there any advantage in trying to buy into a closer resort or would it be more advantageous to find the best deal on points possible regardless of location?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Points are not points if you particularly want a high demand date at a high demand resort. In that case, you would seek points at that resort, or CWA if it has inventory on that resort. Otherwise, seek the lowest maintenance fees.

You get advance reservation time where you buy so that could influence your decision. Great Smoky Mountain Lodge has the water park and new units. But Wyndham Smoky Mountains has the mountain vibe, really nice outdoor pool with view and somewhat low maintenance fees.

We like Wyndham Nashville - lots to do around there.

Points are symbolic of an ownership in real property and are the currency we use to make reservations. and for that purpose, points are points.... however

there are two reasons to buy points at one resort or another (or CWA)

1) low maintenance fees
2)Advance Reservation Priority

If there is a high demand week and you have to have to have that reservation, you need to buy points deeded at that resort (or CWA) for ARP.
But if ARP isnt an issue for you buy the lowest mf points you can find, and afford

You need to, if you have not, read the directory. To get a feel for your area. Look at the fees for the TSs in your area. Then your really like to like the avenue, worldmark, etc. That would give you an idea of how many points you , want. And then there is what you can afford.

Spring and fall breaks can be high demand timeframes at some resorts and locations. You mentioned Destin. That is one of the areas. You will need to make a reservation as soon as possible if you do not have APR at a particular resort. As for, are points, points? Cheap points are cheap points, but can be expensive to own. And visa versa.

Good luck, God speed and as a newbie, thank you for visiting TUG.

As you have pretty much settled on the Wyndham points timeshare option .. now, the ins & outs of working the system become important.

Yes, ARP might be needed based on the time of the year you would be going to those FAVORITE resorts. Panama City or Destin has higher demand in the Spring Break and HIGH summer season ... I believe.

The waterpark resorts in Wyndham seem to have the weekends booked solid ... and all the time when there are school holidays and summer vacationing.

So now, you have to also figure out HOW MANY points you need or would use for ARP at either or both resorts. Or are both in CWA ... would that be a better way to go OVER the individual ARP ownership windows.

If you haven't already ... print off the points charts for the resorts (2 now, right?) you will mostly be booking at. The last thing you want to do is buy a deed shy of 15,000-20,000 points you would need for your ARP booking window.
