Apparently I am a very rude person over the phone (telemarketers, usually timeshare)

I guess I am just making these folks angry. I received three calls yesterday, two different calls so far today, and my line is, "Oh, so you are a scammer," after listening to 5 seconds of their monologue.

So a person today told me I am rude after she announced the name of her company, which was no less than 5 words, something like National Vacation Monetary Compensations Network, or some oddball name like that. Yeah, well you called me, lady, and I can say whatever I want to you because YOU CALLED ME.

"I didn't ask for your call, and I didn't want your call, and why did the called ID say Identified as Scam?" Yeah, it did say that. She called me back three times right away to tell me how rude I am. And guess what? Three different caller ID's.

I don't even give them that much time. If I don't recognize the number, I don't answer. If I do pick up the phone and can usually tell immediately it's a telemarketer, I hang up.

A magazine article I read said the average person gets 10 ROBO calls per week. I don’t answer unless I recognize the number. Also, I only have my cell phone and use the HIYA AP to block ROBO calls. A few get through each week and my phone rings. If I answer by mistake, I hang up in the first two seconds of the call. I never say anything. So, you are not rude. Most people just hang up on them and forget about it.

I agree. Now, I tuned my radio on to the highest volume and blast that music into the phone for two (2) minutes.

Me: Hello?
Caller: (long pause) Hello? Can you hear me? Oh hi! This is [Susie/Donna/Betty/Whoever] from [Insert Telemarketer Name here.]
Me: [Hangs up]
----------------------

I had a call a few weeks back, (can't recall who it was now.) After I told them I wasn't interested, that my number was on the Do Not Call list, and to never call me again, the call clicked off, but didn't disconnect. I heard them call me an a$$hole just before the line disconnected. Excuse me? You're the one soliciting ME. I didn't ask you to call, and do not want your services. You are breaking the law by calling my number. It is my option to treat you however I want to.

Cindy, I'm on your side. :)

Why not get rid of all of telemarketing? Now with e-mail I get more then enough.

It's best not to answer, or if you do, don't say a thing and just hang up. You don't want to p*$$ off a telemarketer and have them put your name and phone number on the "sucker" list out of spite, and end up with MORE calls.

I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt, and believe many good people get into telemarketing out of financial necessity. Most people who try it don't last very long, and I don't want to add to their misery. I simply don't pick up an unknown caller or "Suspected Scam" phone call.

We have got to the point where I finally turned up our call blocking on Ooma to the max. Only calls from our contacts get through, known telemarketers and my personal blocked numbers get a continuous ring, all others go to VM. The number of calls we get is now zero. Not many VM ever get left.

With so many telemarketers making so many calls over all these years, haven't all the gullible people wised up by now?

According to YouMail:

June 2018 Nationwide Robocall Data
4.1 billion robocalls were placed nationwide in June 2018,
equaling roughly 12.7 calls per person affected.

I guess I am in good company with you. I have been told “you are not being very nice to me” from a RCI representative that refused to transfer me to a supervisor saying none are available.

My husband used to huffily inform them they were calling a number on the do not call list and to never call him back when he got any kind of solicitation calls on his cell phone. Apparently he didn't grasp that the do not call list means nothing to some of these people because we are both on it and still get plenty of calls on our cellphones. I finally got tired of hearing him vent and while he was going off on the person calling grabbed his phone out of his hand, disconnected the call and blocked the numbers of the calls that had come in the last few days. He now knows that you can block numbers and how to do it. Lol.

I have started to realize that many of the scam callers don't really have an option. I'm sure most of the timeshare resale people are aware of their mission, but many of the "survey" people and the "medic alert" people are just trying to make a living. Not really their choice. About a year ago, I got a call (like we all have) from a broken English Indian who was telling me that my Windows computer was infected. I started in as to the fact that the scam is over 5 years old and people were sick and tired of this BS - and why didn't he get a real job. He responded by saying, "Sir, if you would hire me with a real job, I would be happy to take it." I realized that my life was far better than his, despite the annoyance.

I tried blocking individual numbers and that has become futile. They change their number constantly and usually always look like they are coming from a local exchange and probably a real person. I don't bother to block individual numbers anymore.

Yep, our home phone only allows people in our contacts list through, which means we do have to add doctors numbers, etc. as otherwise they get voicemail. This just reminds us to add their number!

On my mobile device, I use Hiya and have yet to go to more extreme only contacts ringing, but will if it gets bad. Currently, Hiya tells me it's a telemarketer or scam or whatever, and, I have not answered one in at least a year. But if it rings more than a time or two a day, I will enable only contacts to ring through. No reason to spend any effort trying to talk to these folks.

NOMOROBO.... It works. Your phone rings once and disconnects. If a spam call should get through, you can report it and it will be added to the list.

You and I know that but my husband doesn't and I'm not telling him. I don't have to listen to him getting all worked up about the calls anymore as he gets great satisfaction from hanging up and adding the numbers to his blocked list.

Once in a while when I keep getting calls from the same groups or businesses I've gotten satisfaction from frustrating them when I get a real person or the call finally goes to a real person. I keep asking who is this and after a couple of times with that proceed to making them repeat several times what they are calling about. When I've gotten all mileage I'm likely to get out of that I tell them something like we don't have that car anymore, credit cards are the work of the devil, I have a phobia about being buried or cremated because I might still be alive, medicare and supplemental insurance is a plot to kill of old people, or whatever my fertile mind can come up with. Then I hang up.

If they don't appreciate people being a jerk or rude to them they need to find a different job.

The only telemarketers I will listen to are those calling from Coughlin Brothers Mortuary......

Just saw this on Facebook and thought it was funny and fit the thread too.

Of all the ways to handle a telemarketer this is my favorite.

Getting them by text too ? Without touching their links, forward to 7726. They seem to come back in about a week or 2 and l forward to 7726 again.

I am not going to have compassion on a person who knows he is lying and about to scam someone (in high probability a senior citizen or a non-tech savvy person) out of their hard-earned money.

IF I HAVE THE TIME to make their lives miserable, I listen to them, answer their questions with entirely fictitious information, and after wasting their time for about 10 minutes, I ask them how they feel about me having supplied them with entirely fictitious information, and having wasted 10 minutes of their time. That usually results in the telemarketer abruptly ending our call, leaving me heartbroken.

When my nephew was really little my sister would hand him the phone and let him talk to the telemarketers.

I simply don’t answer my phone. However there are times when I’m expecting a delivery or a workman is on his way and I have to answer all calls because a lot of people have cell phones with out-of-state area codes.
