I, too had the A, R, E after one guess.

There are Soooooooooooo many words with those letters that I chose to 'pick' away with word CLIMB....which didn't work.

I ended with a five.

I understand your plight today........
 
Four. I was going to put the correct answer on line three but decided to go for a more common word. Oh well.
