Four. Following up on @Rolltydr 's comment, this word is a past tense that is not normally used in America, but in England and some other parts of the word. In America, the past tense ends in the typical "ed." Personally I don't think the Times should have used it as this is an American game. (Not a terribly serious complaint, but a complaint nonetheless.)
