We will be in St Thomas in April and want to go to St John for a night or two using leftover staroptions. Has anyone ever been able to book a night or two at the 90 reservation window for WSJ? I called SVN today and no availability right now but she said to keep calling. What do you think my chances are? Very slim to none right? I was just wondering if the "Keep calling back" reply was just something they always say or if I really have any chance.

I did look online and there is availability for studios, 2 and 3 bedrooms hillside for cash so i didn't know if the closer it got to checkin if they open those up to staroptions or just leave empty?
Thank you
Crystal

Easter week in April? Slim to none.

Weeks available for rent are not in the Exchange Pool - they will leave them empty. They are weeks that the developer owns, or the owner has converted them to Starpoints.

I agree with Denise, but would also keep checking as Starwood's cancellation policy is far too liberal, in my opinion, which may lead to more than normal last minute cancellations. (For comparison's sake, Hilton starts penalizing refunded points after the 30-day mark, so I would think that most people would make every effort to cancel before that timeframe).

Of course, this plan assumes your willingness to pay airline change fees (usually $150/ticket I think) and the availability of a comparably priced alternative flight. But, we've done this many times in the past -- get somewhere, decide we want to stay longer, and extend for the $150 fee. In fact, I just did the same thing for an upcoming Europe trip. Decided we weren't staying nearly long enough -- so played with Delta's website until I found a flight a week later, departing from a totally different country, that only cost the change fee ($250 for international). I built the extended itinerary to end in that location (sort of a backwards way to plan a vacation but it worked!). $150/$250 is still a waste of money, and goes directly in the airline's pocket, grrrrr .... but a relatively small price to pay to extend a vacation!

No. it's not Easter week. I was looking for a night (or 2) on the 19, 20 or 21 of April.

"Weeks available for rent are not in the Exchange Pool - they will leave them empty."
I thought that was probabbly the answer, unfortunately, but wanted to hear from the experts. Thank You

We won't need a plane, just taking a night in the middle of the time we're spending at MFC. Figured we're going over to St John anyway for the day and had 24,700 staroptions left for 2010, so thought maybe we could just stay the night and go back to MFC the next day. But I like the idea of extending, if I could get my husband to go along with it? As for the airlines, we have lost alot of ticket $ lately because my son is coming - not coming - coming - not coming, and unfortunately no one else can use his tickets. Except with Southwest, love Southwest, now if they would just fly to the Caribbean we'd be all set. Any have a great trip in Europe!

Thank you both for your info.

Not a big deal, just wanted to now if anyone has tried before with any luck?

Winslow -- I feel your pain. I've lost 4 plane tickets in the last month or so ... two due to extending a vacation and two due to dd's plan changes (mostly unavoidable). I have a new policy of using Southwest on anything I think might change! Boy, it WOULD be wonderful if they flew to the Caribbean. I think that's why I've never really used them consistently in the past (even when I lived in Texas -- they went everywhere from there) .... I like to use miles for island vacations! But, I just realized the other day that I'm 1/2 point away from a free ticket, so I signed up for their restaurant plan as I'm determined to finally earn an award! It only took about 30 years -- all my credits have always expired in the past before I could get to the magic 16! :)

Just an update, Trying for WSJ within 90 days was/is doable!!

It paid to call back, only had to try twice, called again today at around noon and got 2 nites in a 2 bedroom Bay Vista for April 19 & 20th with my leftover staroptions that probably otherwise would have gone to waste.

I was very surprised that there was availablity and just wanted to let anyone else know to yes "Keep calling Back"
Crystal

Congrats on your success!!!

I will be trying to do the same for our July trip to Maui. I will post my results too.
