OK, so it is supposed to be faster and 3G, but other than that, how is it different than the old phone, the phone they were selling yesterday?

DH is on his way now. He reserved one at the AT & T store. He has been waiting for this. You would think it was Christmas. Our son has the original. Both are in the IT industry.

3G, GPS, and the pricing is different. (lower upfront cost, higher monthly cost). 3G is what gives it a significant speed boost for data (assuming you have a 3G network where you need it.)

My son is hoping to get one, but won't make it to the store before early afternoon. He got the first one a few days after it came out.

This morning's news reports had people getting in line at 2:30am. They are saying some stores may NOT be sold out today!

ive been eyeing the new sprint iphone clone....looks nifty

Sticking With El Pinko.

Shux, we have not yet figured out how to work all the various bells & whistles on our outstanding Sprint PCS pink cell phone.

It takes pictures & plays games & I don't know what-all that we haven't been able to figure out how to do.

Some of our friends & family members have cell phones with little bitty typewriter keyboards where the number buttons are spozed to be. Way cool, eh?

I needed a new battery for my Blackberry - it stopped taking a full charge yesterday.

So I went to my local AT&T store this morning ----- big mistake. A line several hours long and EVERYONE had to use the same line regardless of whether you wanted an iPhone or not.

Thank goodness Best Buy had a battery and they are in the same shopping center as the AT&T store.

I currently use a razr...it works fine. but if it ever broke id be hard pressed not to upgrade!

I have a BB Pearl and had the Curve briefly with ATT before I figured out that I got zero reception at my house. I turned the phone in even though I LOOOVED it. Now that it is on Verizon, I am thinking I will pick one up when my contract ends (tomorrow!).

I just need a full keyboard. The whole suretype thing kills me. So even the iPhone's "smart type" software would do me in since it's the same idea as Sure-Type. I guess it's all the abbreviations and names that I type.

But DH is drooling heavily right now. Supposedly they have some phones reserved for selling tomorrow and the day after too....

In other news -- my best friend downloaded the new 2.0 upgrade that was released today for his old iPhone and it killed it. NICE.

Katherine,

If you decided to replace your Blackberry tomorrow - check out Costco as a potential vendor to make your purchase.

I happened to be in Costco last weekend for something else and happened to stop by their cell phone booth which had various models from different companies, including Blackberry Pearl and Blackberry Curve. They can sign you up with a Verizon contract and several freebies were thrown in. While I don't remember the exact details, I think the activation fee was waived, a car charger was free and I think they said a bluetooth headset too. It sounded to me like you received more for your money than if you made the purchase at a Verizon store.

Both my kids just got the Blackberry Curve and are LOVING it - my DDs criteria was the full keyboard
I understand that the international version has a slightly larger size keyboard if that matters to you - OOPS! I forgot u are young and can still see

David,

That is the info I was looking for, the 3G makes it faster data. I saw on the news this morning that a lot of cities don't have 3G and I wondered how many people are standing in line for nothing. Below is some info that I just found on the ATT web site. I hope that everyone who bought a phone and is reading this lives in one of the areas below.

I assume that ATT put the 3G network in. Are the other ATT phones going to 3G? How fast is 3G compared to the Verizon EVDO? I know that Verizon charges $40 / month and ATT charges $20 / month. Did that change?

I just saw this, but don't know how reliable it is.

http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bandwidth.asp
EVDO Results
Download Bandwidth Test Results
Download speed: 2152 kilobits per second

EVDO 3g
Download speed: 690 kilobits per second

EDGE ?? 100 kilobits ???

Thanks for Costco tip! I would not have thought that they could do that, especially with the Verizon line. I will go check it out! I played with my friend's Curve today and it was great (just as I remember on that trial ATT one I had last year). But the phone was sooooo ugly! I wish that they had the titanium black that Sprint was offering. I might have to wait a bit longer till they come out with some other color. Shiny silver is just so boring....

I got my first Blackberry curve last Oct and I'm onto my third one already. Although I love my curve, the trackball stopped working on two previous ones! Luckily ATT replaced both of them with no charge. Please tell your kids to watch out for the little rolling ball!

Not willing to ever again deal with AT&T for anything, certainly not their horrible wireless service, I didn't pay close attention to the iPhone except to note it did nothing the Palm Treo didn't already do (for over 3 years before iPhone existed). Now I find out it wasn't even 3G service? Palm and most other carriers have had that for years! It makes those fast, fake screen shots of "surfing the web" with the original iPhone even more laughable. If it was tied to the standard cell network speed those screens would arrive at dial up speeds or less. I had THAT back with my Palm 600 in 2004! When the 650 and didn't have 3G everyone was surprised. That was 2006. By the 700 they were all 3G - even the $99 Pam Centro. What Apple/AT&T is able to push as "innovation and improvement" that is only repackaged ideas from others is nearly to Microsoft hype levels. And people buy into it. No wonder developers can sell $30K timeshares worth maybe $5K. Suckers born every minute.

It's faster than EVDO. You have to look it up. It's HSDPA or something like that, Tom.

As for the other phones, it depends on the phone that you buy. There are lots of phones available that do 3g. The US was a bit behind the rest of the world in implementing 3g.

Thanks David, 3G sounds good. I will take another look at ATT and the iphone.

Re: timeos2 - I had ATT about four years ago and the service was so bad that I said I would never go back. I remember being on hold for 20 minutes before getting a live person to talk with. After that, the person would ask security questions and when I finally got through all that, they were not able to answer a basic question and I had to be transfered and put on hold again. I did my one year with them and quit ATT. I might take another look, but will test out customer service before signing up. The last consumer reports article I read still rates their customer service at the bottom, but they are getting better.

My DH was online with his friend at 430am yesterday. He is thrilled. This is his first I-Phone. Now that he switched from Sprint to ATT,no family plan, I am solo in sprint. He may just switch me over--so looks like I need to research phones. ( last year he switched from Verizon to Sprint, so I had to switch phones then too--thank goodness since I couldn't wait to get rid of my pink razr) I am happy with my basic LG flip phone that rings about once a month . Although from my missed calls list I gather it rings more often, I just never hear it. ( not good when it is the school nurse).
One benefit to me with the new IPhone--I get his old Ipod touch ( a huge upgrade from his hand-me-down IPod original) :cheer:

My son is hoping to get one, but won't make it to the store before early afternoon. He got the first one a few days after it came out.

By the time we got to the store they were all gone, so the poor guy will have to stay with his year-old iPhone for awhile. I suspect he'll survive.

He downloaded the new iPhone software to the old iPhone. (Not everything will work on the old phone, but some things will.) It seemed ok for a short while, then the phone shut down for an hour or so. Later it came back and now seems fine again.

Not sure what to do with the first iPhone when he gets the new one . I'd like it for myself, but I do not want to pay the monthly rate for a second iPhone, so maybe eBay.

We're in San Francisco. The line was around the block, literally. The fellow in front pitched a tent in front of the door 36 hours early. The police made him move it.
