Anyone getting a Kindle Paperwhite?

It is being released soon and Amazon is taking pre-orders. The front light feature is tempting me to finally buy an e-book. The Nook with glow light looks good too but the contrast/resolution isn't as good. I have used Kindle on my iPhone so I am familiar with it and already have some books on Kindle which they say will transfer to the new e-book (stored in the "Cloud"). Would love to hear opinions of Kindle and Nook from those that have them.

Anyone else thinking about buying one or pre-ordered one?

Thanks,

tlwmkw

I have one prereordered. Suppose to arrive Oct 11.

I am pretty excited about it. I use my ipad a lot to read lately because of the lighting so this should help with reading in less light.

I absolutely love my kindle and this is a great update in my opinion.

cindi,

Please post your thoughts once you get the new Kindle. I've been waiting for the clearer, lighted version and would love to hear from someone who has been able to handle one. This may be the device to tempt me into buying an e-reader. Did you order the one with or without ads? How intrusive are the ads?

Ads are not intrusive at all. Both my wife and I have put our orders in for the paperwhites. We are addicted to our kindles (I fought them for years saying that I would never give up paper.... Guess I was wrong!). We actually got to see the new paperwhite last weekend from a friend who is part of the Amazon vine program - It was AWESOME! Its even got my mother in-law deciding to abandon her nook!

Will do though there is no doubt I am going to love it. I really, really liked the original kindle and now am on my 3rd purchase of one. :D

I have one on order - - my first Kindle. Also just got my first Iphone, so for the moment I'm cutting edge!

I took the plunge and have pre-ordered. Won't be available until end of October but I am getting excited now. The reviews of the newer screen and lighting of the Paperwhite all are very positive so that made the decision for me. I use the kindle app on the iPhone and enjoy that but struggle with the tiny screen so this will be good for me. Also I won't run down the charge on the iPhone while reading.

Now I need to research a good cover. Any suggestions?

Tlwmkw:

Did you get the one with Special Offers? Both of my Kindles have SO and I don't find the ads intrusive at all, in fact barely noticeable since they appear on the screen only when the Kindle is in sleep mode and never when reading.

I pre-ordered the Paperwhilte even though it has no speakers or plug-in for headphones since i plan to keep it by the bedside for reading in bed. I do like the speakers on my Kindle Keyboard since I have audiobooks in my Kindle library and I'm excited about the new feature that syncs the audio version with the "readable" version so you can alternate between reading and listening to the same book.

I'm waiting to purchase a cover for the Paperwhite until there are more options than the ones currently offered on Amazon, so can't help you there. I have slip covers for my other Kindles because I find I prefer reading the Kindle "naked" and the sleeve makes it easy to slip them in and out.

Anyone get their Paperwhite yet? I ordered too late so it won't come until the end of October. The reviews all look very good and USA Today gave it high marks too. Of course Nook glow has lowered its price now (now the same as the Paperwhite if you get the one with the ads).

I got mine just in time to take on our vacation, leaving today.

Have it all charged up and some books ready to go but haven't had time to actually sit down and use it.

I will let you know my impressions after getting a chance to play with it.

Yeah what the heck, you can never have too much tech gear. I'll also probably get one of the 7 inch iPads and I have an iPhone 5...

I got mine on Tuesday! I love it :cheer: - It is so much easier to read. On Monday, 10/1, I ordered the purple cover. It came Thursday and looks great. It is not a bright vibrant purple, but a dark purple. I do like to read my Kindle without a cover when home, but when I am on vacation, I prefer to have the cover to protect it when I have it in a tote bag or at the beach or pool. I like this one with the magnet so that it stays shut. The top cover is thicker than the one I have for my 2011 Kindle (I thought that one was fairlly "wimpy").

This is my 3rd Kindle and is the best one yet!!! I had a Kindle Keyboard that I bought in September 2010. Last year, hubby said he thought he would like a Kindle for taking on vacation and wanted me to look for a used one for him. I knew the new smaller Kindle was coming out in September 2011, so bought one for me the day they came out. I have liked that one, but really wanted the Paperwhite when I saw the video on how it worked! So, I ordered it even though we already have 2 Kindles. My grandson may get a slightly used Kindle soon.

You can pay $20 more to have the ads removed. They do not bother me, I had them on the one I got last year and bought the one with them on the Paperwhite. I hardly notice them. They are just there when you open the cover, but one swipe and they are gone and you are reading happily.

I downloaded a bunch of free books yesterday. You can like the kindleboards on fb and get a daily freebie listing on fb.

My Paperwhite arrived a week early, just in time for me to take with on a trip. So far, I like it. But, I don't think it's significantly better than my last Kindle. I think I need to use it a lot more before giving a real review, since the lighting changes the text and while I'm used to reading on my iPad, the Kindle lighting is quite different. Already I've found that I turn off the light for the Paperwhite and my eyes thank me.

Anyway, it's a lot smaller than my last kindle, and I'm sure it will be great. But, unless I find myself using the built in light often, I might end up giving it away and simply get the entry level Kindle (I want a lighter kindle than my keyboard unit, regardless).

Glad to hear that folks like the Paperwhite. Amazon just e-mailed that mine will come a week earlier than they initially said it would. I haven't had an e-reader before so it is all new to me. I like the sound of the light which doesn't shine into your eyes and give eye strain and that was why I finally decided to get one- also the brighter screen which shouldn't be as muddy looking as the older Kindles. I've used the Kindle app on my iphone but the screen is so small that it's hard to really read anything. Excited to finally get my hands on it.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (WiFi) Review

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (WiFi) Review - by Jamie Lendino/ PCMag.com

"As a loyal and faithful reader of What's New Now, I will let you in on a little behind the scenes controversy: The first Paperwhite Amazon sent us was the 3G version, which we like but we feel is overpriced. We really wanted to get our hand on the Wi-Fi version. For $119, it is an easy Editors' Choice. It took us a few more days, but here is our review of the best e-ink reader you can buy."

I used the Paperwhite yesterday for another hour, and it was great. Changing the lighting helped tremendously, as I didn't like the default brightness at all. Text is wonderful (now that I've changed the font). At this point, I can't see how you could go wrong buying one of these.

And, even better, it fits inside my coat pocket, unlike the previous version! :)

After having spent several days using mine, I have to say I really like it. I was able to read in all kinds of lighting situations and it is lighter to hold than my Ipad which I had been using mainly due to the lighting.

I also really like the kindle case I purchased with it. Works very well.
