This year's flu vaccine is "not a very good match" for a common strain of the flu that's especially tough on children, according to the nation's top infectious disease doctor.

Fauci said even though the match for B/Victoria isn't great, a flu shot can still save your child's life.
That's because the vaccine is a 58% match for B/Victoria, according to CDC data released last week. That means if your child is exposed to B/Victoria, there's a 58% chance that their flu shot will be well matched to protect against it.
There's a 42% chance that the vaccine won't be well-matched for B/Victoria, so the shot won't do a great job of keeping them from getting the flu. But it could help protect them from getting so sick that they develop life-threatening complications, Fauci said.
In addition, the shot will likely prevent infection with the other major strain of the flu that's out there right now. The vaccine is a "a really good match" for that strain, called H1N1.

I am not sure why having only a 58% of a chance of possibly saving a life is a reason to not get a shot that leaves you with 0 chance. I have always lived under the philosophy to not let perfection be the enemy of good.

It was a mismatch for me because the strain mutated but I feel my flu wasn’t as bad because I had the flu shot. I know what my sister went through when she got the flu a few years back. She didn’t have the shot. I was maybe at 20% of her symptoms and I was still miserable. She now takes it. I rather have some protection versus no protection.

I hear you all. I have held out from getting it but I am getting up there in age and my luck could run out. Just hoping the universal shot is developed soon before I have to resort to getting the current versions.

It’s not the percentage of the effectiveness that bothers me about the flu shots. It is the fact that you have to get these current versions every single year.
