I was so impressed with this movie. It filled in a lot of history for me ( lived through the time, but just wasn't paying careful attention to those issues). I strongly remember how outraged I was at Dan White getting off for the Twinkie defense after assassinating two public San Francisco officials. I think Sean Penn may well get the Oscar for this.

Cheers Liz!

I haven't seen the movie yet but have many friends who have. All say it is truly a great movie. I hope to see it between writing contracts this week -- love those Wednesday afternoon $4 features!

We saw it the day after Christmas. I was living in southern California at the time and didn't really hear about Harvey Milk until after he was killed. The infamous "twinkie defense" was what made the news.

Thought the movie was wonderful. So very impressed with Sean Penn.

Saw It

My wife and I saw it. It was ok - maybe I was expecting too much. I was touched by the history of the events shown in the film. Sean Penn was good.

But I think the film lacked drama. There should have been a build-up in the tensions between Dan White and Milk but there was very little of it. It left me totally confused as to why White did it (beyond the obvious). It was such a letdown in that respect. That part of the movie - and it should have been a big part - just seemed flat.

It was probably very true to what happened. I think that was why it was such a shock.

To me it did develop the relationship between Dan White and Milk very well and made it made more sense than when I just heard about it when it happened.

We were commenting the other day about how little we really knew about it at the time, as this was before the advent of CNN and other cable news networks.

I had just moved back East from the Bay Area when Harvey Milk and Mayor Moscone were gunned down. Having followed the news pretty closely, I think the film did a good job of re-creating that era of political activism in San Fran. Sean Penn did a brilliant job.

Speaking of films, my fave documentary of 2008, "Trouble the Waters" (about Hurricane Katrina's very personal impact on lives) is short-listed for an Academy Award nomination. I'm also hoping an Oscar will go to my fave foreign feature of 2008: "Slumdog Millionaire".
