Anyone else scheduled to go to Maui this summer?

We're currently scheduled for late June for two weeks, including flying our parents out with us for our 10-year vow renewal. I have until late April to cancel my bookings (1BR OV + 2BR OV) and re-book for later in 2020, but with all of the uncertainty going on, and how slowly this country is reacting to CV-19, I'm not sure what the right move is. I wouldn't even think of cancelling until the last day possible, but my options appear to be:

  • Things get better and we go to Maui as planned
  • Cancel our reservations in late April, re-book for later in 2020 if possible
    • If I can't make late 2020 work, list my units for rent on Redweek
  • Keep our reservations past April and if things don't get better, use II as a late deposit
    • Not sure I would really be able to use this option, since Maui would be my destination, and I have little hope of getting units 60 days out
On top of all of this, my assumption also includes AA modifying their current cancellation policy to accommodate me changing our flights. If I could actually get refunded for the flights, it would make this a little easier.. I stand to lose close to $10k all things considered if the entire trip is wiped out and I can't use the flights.

To add to this, has anyone considered "cancel for any reason" travel insurance? If so, where are you looking?

I'm just not sure where to go at this point.

Luckily our 3 weeks on Kauai is not scheduled until September.

Not Maui, but we’re booked for 4 nights on Oahu and a week on the BI in mid-July. We’re both in the high risk age group, and my 94 year old father is going with us. We’re just holding tight for now; my main concern is flying. Just have to see what the airlines do - our Oahu stay is a cancellable hotel, and our BI TS can be cancelled too. If I were you, I’d wait until late April - this is a fluid situation with changes likely between now and then.

That's my plan for now, just wait and hope for the best. CFAR travel insurance is also out of the question, as you have to purchase it near when you purchase flights.

We also have MOC for summer travel July 10 for one week and also air with AA for 6 people. Also not sure what to do now. We do not have an II account.

If you listen to the POTUS, he just said yesterday that this could go on until July or August. No political comment, just repeating what he said.

I feel for all as these are not easy decisions to make... my gut reaction is 'health is worth more than the expense of any one vacation'. As a bargain hunter it irks me to lose out on a good deal - as a perfectionist it irks me when things don't work out right after all my careful planning - as a tightwad I hate paying more than I should (paying and not getting anything!? that's a real burn ). But as a 60-something, at risk health-wise person, during an unprecedentedly challenging period in history I'm having to accept that playing it safe is really my best option at this point. Not trying to tell ANYone what to do - just offering my perspective in case it might be helpful. These are uncharted waters for us all...

It sounds like you have a good handle on the options. Waiting until late April to do anything makes a lot of sense. Hopefully AA does the right thing soon! Delta & Southwest have made concessions. 10K is not small potatoes. But if it comes to that, when measured against health, 'it's just money' right? As a bargain hunter it irks me to lose out on a good deal - as a perfectionist it irks me when things don't work out after all my careful planning - as a tightwad I hate paying more than I should (paying and not getting anything!? that's a real burn ). But as a 60-something, at risk health-wise person, during an unprecedentedly challenging period in history much as I hate to - I too may have to bite that bullet. Good luck with it - hope it all works out one way or the other!!

Yeah, I'm not going to risk anything, at the end of the day. I (late 30s) don't want to get sick, nor do I want to get others sick.

I've never dealt with II before. Right now, it looks like my plan is going to be cancelling my current weeks, and trying to reboot them later in the year, and then depositing them with II so that I have 2 full years to use the exchanges. Has anyone else gone this route before? I wasn't sure if I needed to actually rebook my week before depositing with II.

We're scheduled the last 2 weeks of June. My SW flights, DVC points, and car rentals are cancellable. Not sure what RCI is doing, but I have points to burn, so I'm not too worried yet. As long as they lift the 14 day quarantine, we'll go. We don't mind take out, eating in our unit, and we mostly stick to snorkeling/beaches.

Just check to be sure the beaches are open. Looks like they have closed some of them.

I have a trip to the Big Island planned for May 16. I expect that it will be cancelled but am waiting a bit longer.

Well, it's done. I changed my June/July dates to late November. I'll play it by ear for a few months and then decide whether or not we want to go for a week in November and rent the 2BR unit, rent out both units, or deposit both units with II. This is depressing.

Have reservation in Maui for September 2020 and Wyndham Shearwater in 2021. I am hoping that we get to take both trips. The airfare already booked for September.

We had plans to be there in two weeks. We are currently in the process of changing to September. Both Maui and the Big Island. I hope the world will have returned to something resembling “normal” by then.

My son cancelled his week at our place at WKORVN for 3/22 for his honeymoon. I rebooked a week on 9/27. Now I just need to battle AA. We cancelled his flights and they gave him credit to use by 12/2020. I have heard they were extending it to 12/21 but I heard this week that the Federal Gov might make the airlines give refunds as opposed to credit. I can get flights in Sept for about $250 last time I looked compared to the $550 he paid.

I usually go to Insuremytrip web site and they have alot to offer. Also, pleasant reps to discuss questions/concerns.

The main problem is that you need to purchase “cancel for any reason” insurance within a few weeks of booking your trip; it’s the only way to actually use that insurance for a full refund. I missed that boat.

I at least have some options for my units in Maui, but I’m expecting to get screwed over by AA.

Getting us back on topic . . . We have two weeks reserved in Maui the last week of September and first week of October. Airfare already purchased. We certainly hope most of this COVID-19 crisis is over and we'll be welcome on the island.

My wife has asthma, so I have to take that into account for any trip. I'm hoping that September and later things are getting back to normal, but honestly, I don't think I could enjoy a trip this calendar year at this point. I'd be too worried about one of us getting sick, and Maui Memorial is already a pretty small medical center.

Tourism industry workers have invested their lives in making people feel welcome. I don’t know why that would change. Once open for business, these people are going to be extremely happy to be out of their homes and working again.

At this point, the 14 day quarantine for arrivals, has turned out to be a vital decision perhaps saving hundreds or thousands of lives.

We have a trip planned in early July to Kauai. I can cancel lodging w/o restrictions by early May. However have non refundable airfare on Alaska. Just waiting to see what'll happen with Covid situation.

Also have a TS week on Big Island for DD at end of July, that was re exchanged after I cancelled orig April week. Might have to cancel that one too for more restrictive Ii certificate.

I have noticed a major change in behavior on Oahu. My best guess is that we don’t become New York. But I think we were headed there. The next few weeks will tell us a lot. It is good you have a few weeks to make your decision on lodging

We leave on AA from Orlando to Kona Coast on August 1 -15. Then Kauai at Pono Kai from August 15 - 29. Then Maui Schooner from August 29 - September 19th. Keeping our fingers crossed.
