No, the word "hater" doesn't express an opinion. It is a quick retort that MARGINALIZES folks whom someone happens to disagree with. Your very argument, that people are entitled to their opinion, goes against the USE of the word. People who use the term "hater " are attempting to police the way people talk. Careful, lest you make yourself sound like a hater.
I think that most people who use this term do not know what hate is. That is, they haven't experienced it personally. They think it means "quick, sharp annoyance that will fade in 15 seconds when my attention wanders elsewhere." Those of us a little older, or with a little more experience, or who read a newspaper, have a little more idea of what "hate" means, and to see the term applied to a preference or a social choice just seems shocking.
