Anyone else "over" the word "hater"?

L

laurac260

It's become, to me, the most obnoxious word of our time, currently. I personally find it more annoying than the word "twerk", if that's possible. To me, it's just an excuse to be whiny, to play the victim card. You don't like me? You must be a hater. You don't agree with me? Hater. You don't do as I do, live as I live, like as I like, hate as I hate? You MUST be a hater.

That leaves only Ghandi and the Pope as non-haters, doesn't it?

Call me a hater, but I've really become a hater of the word hater!!

It became clear to me after I reread this, then I should probably clarify. I'm not specifically referring to the "fill in the blank with contentious social issue"... If you have teenagers, if you have the displeasure of having to go through Instagram, you can be labeled hater for not liking somebody's twerking video.. For not being a fan of their favorite music, or posting that your favorite celebrity should've kept his original hairstyle.

Totally agree. "Hater" is absolutely inappropriate in 99% of the cases that I have seen.

In the same vein, I think "the war on <insert your favorite group here>" is also misused in popular culture. If you disagree with a policy having to do with dogs (for example), there are a lot of people who will say that you engage in "the war on dogs". Substitute "dogs" with a multitude of other terms (which I won't list here to obey the forum rules) and you get my point.

"Haters gonna hate." I HATE that! Doesn't matter what your reasoning is for being against something, even if it's rational and well-thought-out, guaranteed that at least one somebody who disagrees with you is going to reduce your thought process to, "haters gonna hate." There's nothing more dismissive or aggravating, IMO.

Laura, I agree, especially when I post an opposing reply to something someone says in an online forum (rarely Tug), and I'm accused of being a hater. Say what?? They don't know me, have no idea what I truly think, and all I did was offer a different point of view. And just like clockwork, out comes the "Don't be a hater!" replies. Seriously?? if I was going to be a true HATER, there would be SMOKE and FLAMES coming out of their computer! ;)

As for your other point, I'm picturing your double-whammy response if someone says you're a "twerk hater." :D

I agree with you. Some people think you are a hater simply because you don't agree with a certain position or idea. Simply not true.

Personally, the phrase that I am so tired of hearing is "just sayin". Please, just stop. And I agree about the "war on <<fill in the blank>>" :crash:

"Hater" is not part of my lexicon and I have not heard it used around me. So no problem with the word.
I am tired of "selfie". Just learned what "ratchet" is, but I guess that has been around.

One that drives me right up the wall is when somebody walks into a room on a real estate TV show, or someone shows them something or other, and their first response is "Now, THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!"

Excuse me, Bonehead, but this is the first thing you've said in my presence. How in the heck would I have any idea of what you've been talkin' about? (This is especially aggravating on those real estate TV shows where people with no budget are trying to buy a mansion in paradise - and all they can afford is a pup tent at the nearby campground. The Agent shows them something well beyond their means, and they immediately go into stupid-head mode, and usually recite the line above. To quote my favorite line from the movie Clueless: "As IF!!" :D

I strongly disagree with you and everyone else on this thread who is tired of the word "hater". The term Hater expresses an opinion. People are entitled to their opinions and they way they express them. It is another form of being "pc" to try to denigrate people using that word. Why do so many people feel the need to police the way people talk?

I agree. To decide that a person is a hater because that person doesn't agree with the "correct" viewpoint is tiresome (at best--other words seem more appropriate to me).

No, the word "hater" doesn't express an opinion. It is a quick retort that MARGINALIZES folks whom someone happens to disagree with. Your very argument, that people are entitled to their opinion, goes against the USE of the word. People who use the term "hater " are attempting to police the way people talk. Careful, lest you make yourself sound like a hater.

What about the extensive use of the word LIKE? I believe Webster's only allows the word to be used like in every third word in like a sentence.

You've all heard the new Webster's says the word "Literally" now means BOTH "literally" and "figuratively." So you can be right and wrong and right all at the same time. Literally.

In real life, I've only heard "hater," used as slang by teenagers. My students used it as a put down that preempted any intelligent debate. It was the cool thing to say about anything controversial.

Guess I orbit in different circles. 'Hater' is not a work I hear in my day-to-day existence. If I DID hear someone referring to me as one, I'd probably reply, "Huh? Please clarify." Just sayin', however IS getting tiresome.

In time, they too will pass. Go into the "way back machine" and remember... WHATSUUUUUP!

I must live a very secluded life. I've only seen "hater" used in "Mallard Fillmore" comics when its being joked about.
What I "hate" are the commercials when somebody talking goes into a falsetto and sings "Awesome" or some other word or phrase.

I was just sayin, you know?
