I'm staying 1 night at Courtyard at VCE. I arrive 11 a.m. I signed up for a boat tour. It was an offer by Marriott Moments. It's a 4-1/2 hr. tour of Murano, Murano and Torcello. The tour wasn't expensive but the cost of getting to the dock may be. I wrote the hotel and here's what they told me:

"The shuttle ride after the one at 11.30 is at 12.30 so I would suggest to catch a car taxi for the price of 15€.

You do not need to book a water taxi because usually they are available at the dock of the airport. The price would be around 100-120€."

Tour departs from the Alilaguna pier in front of the Royal Gardens (Giardinetti Reali) at San Marco 2:30 p.m.

Any ideas of getting to dock without 120 Euro cost?

Not an expert... but we were in Venice at end of April. We flew into Rome and took a train to Venice, followed by a private water taxi, at a cost of 65 Euros one way to take us to Gritti Palace. There are 2 types of water taxis, one is the private ones and a public taxi bus. We did not take the public taxi bus since we had lugguages but I remember it was fairly inexpensive by comparison, something like 5 or 15 Euros.

I do not know the location of Courtyard but Gritti Palace was very convenient and we walked everywhere. We did take a Murano Glass Making and Burano Lace Factory tour on a ferry, booked through Viator. I would say that was one of our less interesting tours and thought it was a waste of time. We like the "Venice in a day" tour much more.

Anyway, the vendor had his own pretty nice ferry/motor boat that sat 8 to 10 people. We walked to the meeting place to get on the vendor's ferry. Venice is very walkable unless you are stuck on a separate island like the JW Marriott.

You should be able to take a train over to Venice and then a ferry out to Piazza San Marco for far less than €100. I would suggest buying a Rick Steve’s book and explore on your own. You can go at your own pace and see only what interests you. We did Venice last year using his book as a guide. It was wonderful.

From the airport to San Marco may require a water taxi to make the schedule. If your hotel is actually in Venice (on the island) you could easily jump on a Vaporetto for a very small price, but I am not familiar with where the Courtyard is.

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Mestre a couple of years back because we had a car with us. The hotel sold us day passes for the bus into Venice. It was really convenient and cheap - the buses came every 15 minutes or so and dropped you within a 10 minute walk or so of the main tourist sites on the island. It looks like that Courtyard you're staying at is on the same bus route.

The bus is your most economical option. Take the bus to the end of the line in Venice, which is Piazzale Roma. From there you walk across the street to the vaparetto stop and get a ticket to take you along the Grand Canal to San Marco. Total price should be about €10.

This way you'll have the added option of sightseeing your way along the Grand Canal up to San Marco. This entire trip would take about an hour.

Your other option is Alilaguna water bus, but this requires you to go back to the airport to catch it.

Thank you all.

As mentioned in some responses the Courtyard is not on the island . It’s right by the airport. In the past we’ve taken slow ferry, bus and train but I’ve never had to work with a tight schedule.

We’ve been to Venice several times and walked much of it in day and night. Would lov to have a day on the water although the weather forecast for tomorrow isn’t looking good.

I agree with jlp879. Not sure where you catch bus but I know you can catch it at the airport. If I recall from six months ago it seemed like the bus ran about every 20 minutes. I think it was about $7. Walk across and get on vaparetto and go directly to San Marco (San Marco square, thats where the gardens are). I would allow about 2 hours to play it safe. But once you got on bus it shouldn't take more than a little over an hour. You probably could walk it from the bus and it would take about 40 minutes at most.

Well after today I feel more “expert” than before.

Caught the hotel shuttle from the airport. Had 10 mins. for quick shower and change. Hotel again suggested the slow ferry (2hrs) from airport and I got the next shuttle back. This eliminates changing modes of transportation once you get to the island. The water bus is soooo sloooow.got to the dock in plenty of time.

I noticed on the way the water bus got to murano rather quickly.

Tour was very much described as above...underwhelming. Besides that we had a downpour that began on Torcello and continued to Burano. I caught water bus from Burano to murano to get back to airport without having to return to Venice.

Guide was helpful getting me back but her descriptions were minimal. She seemed to read them in English,Italian, and German.

Got that out of my system. Enjoying a good burger back at the hotel. DD is here:cheer:
