If your group enjoys cards, our family enjoyed playing Five Crowns during our Thanksgiving Reunion holiday. It is sorta like playing rummy but with a progression and special cards.
We love Settlers of Cataan. To play with 6 players you will need the original game and the expansion pack.
We got Dominion for Christmas, but we haven't played it, yet.
We love one of the old 3m bookcase games called Acquire. It is probably our all time favorite game. It is available on Ebay - you want the 3M or original Avalon addition, not the new one.

I vote for Trivial Pursuit.
Have you ever tried Fact or Crap? It's pretty fun with a larger group and is sort of a fast-paced trivia game.

Trivial Pursuit with decks for the 1950s and 1960s.
Can't remember its name, but there's a deck of cards with categories (movies, fruits, vegetables, cars......) and letters (A,B,C...). Someone pulls one category and one letter, shows them both, and whoever is first to shout out (for example) a fruit beginning with A wins a card.....it gets pretty wild.

Years ago we bought the game Reminiscing. It was geared for our generation at the time, so of course is still relevant. Probably not made anymore, or for younger people, but it is great to get people to bring up memories of younger days as you move around the board.

A variation of Canasta called Hand and Foot has gotten popular around here. It uses a bunch of decks, though, so a multi-deck mechanical shuffler is a real help. There seems to be as many rule variations as there are players, but here's one site with directions: http://www.pagat.com/rummy/handfoot.html
We regularly play with two other couples, usually as two teams of three, although it can be played as 3 teams of two. It's hard to fit more than 6 around the table and have everybody able to reach the draw and discard stacks in the middle.
Other favorites in our household have been mentioned earlier:

Our favorite game, especially when playing with highly-educated "50 somethings," is Balderdash. The game is hilarious. It's even fun with high-school kids mixed in.

card game I've been playing since very young. Easy to learn, takes a lifetime to master. All you need is a deck of cards and scorepad. Any number can play. You can use 2 decks if you have a lot of people.
You can google for rules, they are easy.

Not a game, but Kareoke is fun if you can get a DVD or something to do it.
I also like Charades.
If you have enough energy you could plan enough questions to do the Newlywed Game. There may still be a board game out there, and it would be a lot of fun for couples who have been together for a long time.

We played Taboo for the first time on Christmas night. It was lots of fun. We also have played Bid Euchre and quite liked it. Of course, my favourite is Trivial Pursuit.

Plus one for Apples to Apples, we also like Skip Bo. Last Word is fun too even if I always lose. Yahtzee is another oldie but goodie.

One of the things about Sequence I like is that it allows for some conversation as the game goes on.
(The person whose turn it is, and perhaps the next person need to concentrate some on their play.)
It's kind of set up to get a BINGO (5 in a row Sequence) on a big board with two decks of cards with Jacks as Wild Cards. Blue vs Green, you can help your team get 5 in a row with your card/chip, or block the other team.
It takes two sequences to win (if three teams, only one sequence needed).
