I plan to take the Standard Deduction for TurboTax. I have some Income from Savings, some Qualified Dividends, etc.

I don't know if that means I should file the Free version, or BUY the Basic or Deluxe version.

Can I start to input the info, with the thought it might be free...but once it reaches a higher level (Basic?) or even higher (Deluxe), I will simply pay that amount??

To clarify.....I have always purchased the Deluxe Version (Disc).....since I did not know if Basic was 'enough'

Now, I heard there is no physical Disc....

Correct, the days of the disc are gone. All you have to do is get started online, and then you pay when you are done.

The options for upgrades now are do it yourself, live assisted, and live full service.

While disc is gone, they still offer full desktop with download. You can start out with free online and it will tell you if you need to pay based on what you enter. You can do the same with desktop. Start with Basic and it will tell you that you need to upgrade if necessary.

Yes, you buy and activation code and download the image from the Turbo Tax site.

I actually ordered on Costco.com and they just send an email with the license keys and a link to download the software.

So, it will know my info from previous years of Buying the Disc, and using TuboTax??

yes, if you had more than $1500 in dividends/ interest which requires a Schedule B then you're probably not eligible for the free version of TurboTax
Intuit wants you to pay!

So, with that amount of dividends/interest, I still may only have to pay for Basic?

I bought at Costco, but it contained no instructions. I ended up having to do two chats and a phone call and they sent me the link I thrn got the screen where I clicked on the deluxe because I didn’t have the site listed on the product I bought, this took more time than my return so far.
It is slightly different this year. .so I proceeded carefully.
all my information from previous years was filled in, I imported my main brokerage account, filled in the numbers for my pension, etc. it did not take long at all. Now I am waiting for my schedule K. To arrive to finish the return.
i had a little problem reporting rental income from timeshares. This is the first time it tried to get me to report separately income from Airbnb and PayPal. I managed to just report income and expenses when I went back and started again.
i bought the deluxe because I usually do my sons return with state And the package I bought includes five returns and state.

It costs me $10.00 to file my state return electronically and the state received it the same day.

I don't know about the full online version, but if you buy the download version it is just like you had a disk except you download it. You can transfer prior year returns into it.

Which state and which software?
TurboTax download offers a $10 discount on in software purchase which can be applied to state efiling. I believe my in-laws pay $15 to file in Ohio. It was $25 without the discount.

I downloaded TurboTax Deluxe from Costco, no problems. One state is included of course, and they offered a $5 discount on an additional state. Whoop-de-doo!

But they still wanted $20 to file electronically my Indiana return with the $9 refund, so I printed the 7 pages -- Indiana doesn't require a copy of the Federal return -- and mailed it for $1.01.

Yes, I usually purchase for those I file for. It adds up. I think tt charged 45 last year for a second state and25 for each state. It adds up.
I outdone like to know if you switch to different software, what it imports. Tt is costing me a lot to do others a favor.
thats why I asked the poster what state and what software

I am not a Costco member
You can also buy directly through Intuit. Your financial institution or brokerage may offer TurboTax for a discount too. I don't think Costco is offering any discounts on TurboTax now anyway.

I bought mine directly from Turbo Tax. I have used Turbo Tax for years and had the discs, but this year, just got the license #. It uploaded all my previous info. I had to wait until after the 22md to get all my information from my investments. I did use the upload feature for my investments this year. I was glad that I did when I saw all the boxes that were filled in with dividends etc. I sent the Fed in on Thursday and the State yesterday.
