This will mostly affect people this side of the pond but the UK's third largest travel company and major package airline has collapsed overnight

From what I am hearing on SkyNews, this seems to be a charter airline rather than a scheduled carrier.

Among the scheduled carriers, Alitalia seems to be the sick man of Europe these days.

The one that will impact those in the US and Canada more may be the bankruptcy of Zoom, a Canadian trans-Atlantic LCC which had started some routes from the US. It went under a few weeks ago.

It is one of a number of LCC's that had not yet completely gotten their feet on the ground when the oil spike hit. There are others in this category.

Is it even possible to make a profit as an airline today? Maybe humans just weren't meant to fly

Many European airlines, even LCC's, are making profits. Of course they pay for fuel in euros or pounds which helps and charge fares in those currencies, too.

FlyBE, a British LCC, just announced its biggest profit ever.
