ok so i've made my donations to the people charities and now i am looking to donate to help the four legged creatures. my main concern is that the foundation/charity must receive MOST OF THE DONATION if not 100% of the monies. any suggestions?
TIA

You can't do better than your local Humane Society for that.... Jim

I started at www.petfinder.com, went to the dog search, typed in my zip code, and was able to identify 4 local 501c3 organizations in my county that are devoted to rescuing dogs and helping them find "forever homes". I also wanted organizations that are really grassroots and that are working on a shoestring with all-volunteer organizations.

After some additional checking I donated to each of them. These are the smaller organizations that don't get the recognition that the humane society or spca does. The notes I received were so heartwarming - I am confident that every dollar is being put to good use.

Ann

I donate to our local no-kill shelter. We've also adopted several critters from there, so it has a special place in my heart. I'll bet there are several close to where you live.

Where I will NEVER give money again is humanesociety.org. I donated to them after Hurricane Katrina as they claimed to have saved many pets. They may have, but once you get on their mailing list, it is virtually impossible to get off. I was getting stuff once or twice a week! It took me two years of phone calls and nasty letters (didn't dare email them as I didn't want them to have that one too!) to get them to take me off their list.

My stepdaughter operates a 501(c)3 non-profit no kill cat shelter on Long Island, NY. It's "The Purrfect Kitty" (website, www.thepurrfectkitty.com) and is staffed by herself and volunteers and funded entirely by donations and fund raisers. 100% of all monies are used for the running of the shelter and when donations are slow she makes up the difference from her personal bank account which is rapidly being depleted. She only rescues adult cats, often from other shelters who are about to be put down, and adults are harder to place than kittens but she works tirelessly to find good homes for them. Check out her website, thanks.

I donate to the MSPCA in my area online of which you can direct which fund you want your money to go to. Animal shelters also need food, blankets and paper towels and cleaning products. So you can either drop items off or donate online. The NYC MSPCA was always highlighted on Animal Planet for the rescues that they do.

This place gets top marks on the internet, Check it out.

There is also a no kill dog shelter of which the series DogTown was highlighted on Animal Planet . http://www.bestfriends.org/

thanks for all the great suggestions.
as far as mailing lists go, i get money orders for the amount i want to give and then send them anonymously so i don't get on any lists or have my named sold to any other charities.

I second the suggestion of Best Friends. They are a wonderful organization, one of the first groups on the scene to help out the animals trapped after Hurrican Katrina. Their sanctuary (in Kanab, Utah) is a very special place, and I believe is the largest animal sanctuary in the US....

Rather than donate to a large bureaucratic organization, you might consider researching your local animal rescue groups. Just about every breed of dog has a rescue group in just about every major city, and your $ will go a long way to help a locally-run rescue group or no-kill shelter. If you wish to help animals in the wild, again, I prefer to give "locally" because the $ is going to underfunded projects with dire need. I prefer to fund groups run by volunteers that I can trust not to have large administrative overhead. One example is Conrehabit in Mazatlan; I like them because they rescue animals threatened by vacation resort development resulting in destruction of habitat. They also rescue wild animals and birds stolen by poachers for sale in the pet trade.

I want to applaud you for continuing your annual giving, when the need is especially great this year and giving is generally down. Happy holidays to you!

I donate both to my local shelter (time AND money) and to Best Friends in Utah. I think it's important to remember that not all local shelters have low administrative costs and not all national ones have high administrative costs. (Charitynavigator is a good place to check out national organizations. ) I used to give money to a small local organization, and found that only 40% of their costs actually helped animals..the rest went to bloated overhead and salary costs. So, do your research before you give!

Donate when you purchase pet items

Do you have a dog of your own? Some sites will donate a portion of their procedes to pet organizations. One site I used was www.helpingudders.com At the time I bought some things for our new dog, the percent donated was doubled.

Borzoi rescue declined to be added to their list so I donated to Greyhound rescue. Helping Udders lets you donate to so many different breed rescues. It sure has to be a bookkeeping nightmare for the site owner.

You can also donate pet foods and supplies to your local food bank. Not only are many families low on food, so are their pets.
