I never joined AL because when I looked into it they had few reviews for my non-urban area. That was when they were first starting. It also seemed to me that it was ONLY for reviews, thus the value of a subscription. In the last year or so they are advertising that they have contractors listed. So now the people they recommend are paying to be recommended...seems to be as if Consumer Reports had started taking ads.

I had an issue with an Angie's List company and they bribed me to remove a bad review
I'm not sure if they truly pay to be on there BUT I had a horrible experience with a plumbing firm who charged me for drain cleaning, said they went 35 feet into the drain and cleared it. Then they told me if it stopped again they would have to put a camera in it to clear it - and charge me $350 to do so. I was miffed.
Still not working. Called a different firm. They ran their line 29 feet and hit the blockage and cleared it in less time than the first firm took.
Been working like a dream since then.
I called the first company to talk to the manager to get a refund (since they didn't actually fix the problem). Never got called back. Called again. Nothing. An Angie's List person called me so I ranted. They put my review (phone conversation) on and I magically got a call from the first company offering to make it right. Give me back my money. Will you take down the review? I can update it and tell everyone you made it right. Well, we'll give you back your money when you take down the review. They wanted me to sign something saying that I would remove my review, and then they would refund my money. Okay - send that - with instructions on HOW to remove the review. They sent something - WITH SOMEONE ELSE'S NAME ON IT! Must be standard operation for them. Never sent it in, never got my money back, my review is still up (I think). Never heard from them again. I'm wondering how many other people they sent these to to remove their bad reviews.
Gave the second company a nice review.
I won't be renewing.

We've used Angie's list and have done very well. We moved to a new area and it's not always easy to get recommendations. We do look at Yelp reviews in addition to the list.
We typically have 2-3 contractors/service people come in for proposals based on the better reviews. In the past 12 months we've used 7 services including electrical, aluminum, carpentry, painting, closet organizers and upholstering and all have been very good.
We posted reviews stating the pros and cons, as it is helpful to others just as it was helpful to us.
Luckily we are 20 miles from a good sized city, so there are plenty of companies on the list. It would not be a good service if you are in a rural area.
My 2 complaints are (1) that you have to pay for each area. In the process of moving we owned 2 homes and I had to join twice. (2) is that the medical reviews are a separate list, also a separate fee.
Added: I have given negative feedback on a couple of contractors with whom the proposal experience was poor. They are all still on the list and no one has rebutted them.

Once, I gave a company a failing grade for coming to do an estimate and never getting back to me... until that is I posted a negative review in which I said, "Guess they don't need the work." Instant contact.
They begged me to change it... I agreed and modified it to say: "Maybe they really do fine work. But I'll never know."
Everyone can make a mistake occasionally, and contracting can be a cutthroat business, so one or two negative reviews should not be disqualifying. However, they need to know that the days of keeping consumers in the dark are over. I have to give credit to AL for being part of that process.
