Angie's List - is it helpful for choosing a good plumber, electrician, etc?

I have it but haven't found anyone close to my house. I will soon interview the pet sitters highly recommended.

My sister used a recommended mover from Angie and was very happy.

I got new plumber and electrician by asking the dealer who sold the fans for recs and the asking the electrician for plumbers. Other professionals are good sources for each other.

We found our pet sitter through dogvacay.com. These people care for your dogs in their homes. We have been very happy with our new pet sitters and friends. :)

I wonder how her list came to her? Do companies pay to be on this listing? We signed up for that cheaper home insurance repair company for all our home inside items from kitchen to bathrooms that Wells Fargo kept advertising to us. Used it two times and after last time with a plummer we canceled it. Both times people showed up that we would have never used on our own.
The last one a local plummer showed up and looked homeless and started playing cop and asking how the problem happened and who used the toilet last. After he decided our child might have dropped something in which he never found he stated because of this the insurance would charge us a deductable of $55.00. I called then while he stood there and told them how much of a low life this guy was and playing cop and was canceling as soon as he was done.
After all this this guy wouldn't even except credit card to pay. :annoyed:

I used a Groupon for a 1 yr membership for $8.00

I signed up, got a list of 250 plumbers including all the big companies. The plumber we've used occasionally, who is semi-retired, has a few mixed ratings.

I also found a roof-cleaning company with good reviews....we have a good amount of moss on one area, and they say they do not use high pressure for this. I had worried about high pressure damaging our shingles.

I read the comments about our handyman being able to do the jobs I initially listed; Faucet fix, disposal and DW installation, sure - but the pipes under our sink are strangely laid out, and I believe we asked him before and for some reason he didn't or didn't want to change them. The odd layout leads to slow sink drainage.

The ABC news report about fake ratings is also of interest....will have to use some judgment when interpreting them :)
