My mom just received the doctor's call on Thursday confirming breast cancer. I didn't even know that she went in for the biopsy! She is my unsung hero, always caring for others before herself.

I was just too sad/scared to enjoy the exchange we had booked due to check in the very next day. Assuming that I would not have any fees returned, I called RCI just hoping that someone out there would be able to use the week. All I told the rep was that I needed to be with my mom. Imagine my surprise when they returned my week as well as the exchange fee! It was not requested by me, but certainly appreciated.

The rep was so kind and thoughtful and sounded young enough to be my son. Just wanted to share.

Best wishes for your mother's full recovery.

It certainly was nice - and unexpected that RCI did that for you.

Although I know that you didn't ask for this outcome from RCI, it confirms my general philosophy that it never hurts to ask for what you want. If you don't ask, it's almost 100% that you won't get it, but if you ask, you just might get it. ;)

Thanks for sharing...in the end is just boils down to the person on the other end of the line...and I hope all goes well with your family, my prayers are with you and yours.

Sorry to hear the news about your Mom

All the best to your Mom from a ten year bc survivor.

I'll be back to post a very good site I found for a friend.

http://www.breastcancer.org/ They've really changed the format on this site. I think I liked it better previously.

I do not think I would have liked to get a call but an in office visit to get the news.

Look up lumpectomy if it is appropriate and sentinel node biopsy.
YMMV

I too add my best wishes for your mom's full recovery. Be heartened that the medical community has come so far in the fight against breast cancer. My thoughts are with you in this trying time - moms are the best.

Undoubtedly, when you called RCI, you were lucky to get a very compassionate rep. (maybe someone who had been in your shoes sometime?) Either way, it is very heartwarming.

Let me also add my congrats to Jestjoan on her ten year survivor status - truly wonderful!

Jana,

My best wishes for a full recovery to your Mom. My mother and 2 sisters have been down that path. It is bot an easy one.

I'm pulling for your mom, Jana. And incidentally, good for RCI on this one.

sending positive thoughts your way.. and a similar story

Hi, when I read your post, it brought back memories from last summer.. my mom has had her bout with bc and had her breast removed at age 82!! She is doing great and yes :) the breasstcancer.org is a great site which I also read... re: RCI, I had a 2 week trip planned to England last fall and had to cancel due to the illness... well RCI was great and like you, I got my weeks back and the cash... a nice rep helped us find another week, altho it was from extra vacations it really helped out and we were able to make our trip this past APril... we also got a pleasant surprise as we had an ongoing search with one of the weeks and landed a Cayman Island week so we are thrilled. I too was pleased with how RCI responded. Best of luck to you and your mom !!!!

Sorry to hear about your mom, and best wishes to her for successful treatment and complete healing.

Thanks for posting that good report about RCI--hope they keep up the good work!

My mom died and the very next day I had a trip to Cozumel I had to cancel. I lost my RCI exchange fee & week (and the airline was no better). I asked RCI if they could waive the cancel fee but no dice. Since then I've had to cancel due to my own illnesses and surgery, and I've still had to pay the piper. I think RCI thinks they have me by the ____. I'm curious, is your RCI membership close to its renewal date? Mine has many years left, and I'm thinking maybe its time for me to cancel and try to get my pre-paid $ back.

I hope your mother does well. You're a good daughter to care so much. Glad an RCI staffer treated you fairly.

Thanks, Luv, I appreciate that very much.

When my oncologist said it was 10 years, we both forgot at the time that I insisted on stopping the Tamoxifen 6 months early.........

janapur: Don't worry, there has been so much improvement in taking care of breast cancer recently-- has been 16 years for me. :) Also good to hear RCI actually has a heart in there somewhere.

My thoughts are with you and your mom.

Thank you so much for introducing me to this wonderful site. There is a forum for family and friends and I've gone through a box of tissues reading so many touching stories. I am very ignorant with all of the terminology, but learning very quickly with the help of this forum.

I truly appreciate everyone's kind words of encouragement. My husband is not good at being supportive, so it's especially nice to spend some quiet time with TUG.
