Amex Hilton Changes

You made me look it up. Yes, we have the Aspire. Isn't the $400 Hilton credit semi-annual? So doesn't breaking it into just 2 x $200 chunks (Dec &Jan) get all of the credit? Is there another credit you're talking about?
As for the $50 airfare, United Travel Bank turns out to be easy. I first thought it'd be a pain, but it is easy. $50 x 4 gives $200/yr toward a $200 to $225 flight to Hawaii. I guess T-Bank just turns out to be a simpler version of that eCredit route, for those who fly UA.
Sorry, I meant Surpass. We use the Aspire $400 at the normal MF time but the Surpass is trickier because it is $50/quarter

I never (or almost never) fly UA but how long are the UTB credits good for?
Yes, 5 yrs. I use the $200 every summer to buy a 1-way to or fro Hawaii in Dec/Jan. The other issue is something about whether you can combine your TB $s with Miles ( I think not) or with real cash (you can). and have to remember to charge the $s above $200 on a UAL CC to get free bags, since we don't fly enough to be "elite" in any way.

ex- the 4x$50 Aspire credit, the existence of Tbank makes me  b/c it is supposedly for "budgeting". Do I need to give UAL an interest-free loan and then have them restrict how I can get the $s back????????????????????????? for "budgeting"? o_O

As you say, no on miles and yes on cash but what you can’t do is combine UA TB with flight credits.

I danced like crazy to use my Delta Reserve companion ticket and the eCredits for our trip to Aruba last February... But, got it done. Used that and FNCs for a pretty cheap Aruba trip

Thanks for UTB info. We have limited United presents in Chattanooga but sure would like the 5 year timeframe. What about AA or Alaska?

I think that I could make Delta credit work. We fly to Cabo at least once per year on Delta (usually).

I’m wondering if delta companion is better than Alaska companion pass? Alaska forces you to buy the more expensive ticket almost not making it worth it.

Basically UA travel bank is like buying a ticket without a destination or time in the future. You can only apply it towards a United metal flight, no partners and I don’t think bags or anything else other than a ticket. Some claim UATB is a secret work around with platinum but I think it’s allowed since it’s basically a ticket that you have to use or lose.

Yes. We fly United a lot so always choose the UA TB for Aspire.

I'm not sure what that means. As I wrote upthread the only downside is that you can't combine TB with travel credits (which since we fly United a lot we accumulate regularly as we book and cancel flights).

I just mean some people claim adding the airline credit to travel bank is a workaround that they will eventually take away. However I think it’s just like a ticket since you can only use it to pay for a ticket. I don’t think it will go away.

Ah...and I agree. If they made me I would book a ticket and cancel (as I said we accumulate and use UA flight credits all the time) but buying TB seems easier. Actually, I suppose in some sense I *should* book and cancel because I can use multiple flight credits on the same flight.

I also use my Aspire card for TB and often have travel credits, so I book flights as one-ways to use both for one trip.

Is this only available to max members?

Avianca lifemiles does this on each monthly statement which I like. After flight or earning points you can x8 what you earned that month which is worth it at times. We do a lot of Latin America and Caribbean flights and can book star alliance flights through them. Cool to see Hilton going that route.

With Alaska Airlines, I'm finding better rewards by using the one way option. I can't remember the last time we actually paid cash for a flight. It would have been with a companion fare maybe 7 years back.

Bill
We get airline status, each with a different airline, so we pay. For AS, the roundtrip is the sum of the two one-way trips (cash or miles) so never a reason for a roundtrip purchase since one-way is more flexible. Companion fares excepted, of course.

Cheers.

We also fly UA rarely, Since Aspire can work for GCs, or general airfare, it goes elsewhere. Platinum is still limited, so I do UA TB since I have few options (WN is not a viable option for us :)). We have relatives near Medford, OR, and UA have a SFO-MFR non-stop that we take periodically, It can eat up the $200+, so the 5 year time horizon is good.

Cheers.

I’m sure it’s in this 47 page thread somewhere, but if I buy Hawaiian miles will that trigger the $50.00 quarterly credit?

Yes. It should. United definitely does
