Yeah - my daughter goes to college in Daytona Beach so I follow the local news in Volusia Co pretty closely. As the article says it's one thing after another around there: hurricane devastation, riptides, and sharks.
Lots of parents who buy condos for their kids to live in during college and I often scratch my head and think "is this REALLY a place I'd want to make a short term real estate investment"?
The hotels / beaches along there still haven't fully recovered from hurricanes two years ago. When I visit, I hotel INLAND b/c the beaches hold no appeal to me.
When I was in college, we frequently went to Daytona Beach. The greatest danger there at that time was getting hit by a car on the beach. There were typically 3-4 accidents per week when we were there. This is a danger that most other beaches don't have.
In my younger days twenty plus years ago we got to experience the rip currents and several shark encounters. My son and me were on boogie boards and noticed three large sharks very close to us. We quickly got out of the water and noticed several more swimming in the shallow water.
