My wife and I are in Aruba with some friends and we had dinner in Amazonia Churrascaria a few nights ago. We've been there many times during past visits and felt that the food and service were good and the pricing reasonable.

Our most recent visit was somewhat surprising and will be our last. I should have noticed that something was different when we entered the restaurant because it was unusually empty and I now understand why. Although it was never an inexpensive place to eat it has now become an unusually pricey restaurant. Dinner for four with cocktails and desert totaled a surprising $390 U.S. :(

Now, my wife and I are New Yorkers and routinely eat out three or four times a month in Manhattan...so we're not easily surprised by expensive dinners. But Amazonia was certainly an eye opener.

So, if you're visiting, or planning to visit Aruba and you intend to dine at Amazonia be advised that it's pricing has, in my opinion, become excessive

That is excessive. TDB is also that expensive now. Since the new "turnover tax of 3%" started 1/1/07, the pricing has soared in restaurants.

Thanks for the heads up. The food at Amazonia is OK, but not for that price!

That's too bad, Amazonia had great meats and compares with the incredibly good Rodizio places in NYC and the Ironbound Section of Newark, NJ. But $95 PP is rediculous at best.

PS. Hey Tom, go Berner Bisons!!!

Wow Tom! Thanks for posting that. Amazonia was going to be on my "to do" list for the next time we are in Aruba but not anymore!

Either that new tax has things completely screwed up or that is THE most overpriced dinner in Aruba I have ever heard of.

You're sure it was dollars and not florins???

are you sure you didn't pay for another groups dinner also? that is really some price tag for a dinner. while amazonia may be a nice place to eat, it is certainly not fine dining!!

No, the absolutely most overpriced dinner on Aruba is at Chez Mathilde for tasteless food. What a waste of money when you can dine for much less at Madame Janette's or Flying Fishbone...

They have gone out of their minds.

Definitele mediocre

We were there in February of this year and made the mistake of going to Amazonia. It was not as expensive for us as noted above, but the base price was $44 per person. That's not high for good food, but the meat was just OK. With drinks and all, of course, it comes in higher.

With places like Papiamento, why have something mediocre?

Cheers.

Ummm, how many cocktails did you have? I was there a few months ago and it was $120 per couple with one drink each.

Did you possibly order a bottle of wine or two?

Just to reinforce my original post...one cocktail each and three deserts. We we surprised at the cost of dinner. Amazonia is nice, but not that nice.

Dinner is $44 per person. Dessert is about $7 each. With one drink each should have been about $125 per couple. I cant imagine how you paid $390 for four unless your bill was in Florins and you paid in dollars or somehow you left a larger tip than you thought or were wrongly charged. Gratuity is included in all the entrees and desserts as well.

 Thanks for the warning -- we're coming there in February.

There are so many better choices in Aruba, and this place is so pedestrian.

Cheers.
