Amazon prices

we have been with Amazon for over 10 years and we continue to purchase less with them. There return policy has changed dramatically and customer service has become almost non existent.

If you compare their prices to some other options, you certainly see that free shipping with Prime isn’t free. Markups can be considerable.

My biggest complaint with Amazon is the long time for deliveries. Prime used to be 2 days, then it became 2 day shipping so 3 days often for me. Now it's basically a week or whenever it feels like it, often out into October for stuff I looked at today that's "Prime". I still find the free shipping cheaper than some other options - I could have gotten what I just ordered from B&H on the 27th if I wanted to pay an additional $10 shipping for the cheapest fedex option. Luckily, I don't actually need it till end of October so can be patient.

All the Amazon making me patient really hurts them because - Walmart is faster delivery usually cause they ship it faster. Ebay is about the same for similar reasons. Temu is a little slower, but often much cheaper for the same stuff.

However, there's still stuff that is either cheaper (due to shipping fees) or only available on Amazon. I tried searching all over for camera inserts and really only found on B&H and Amazon.

How do you cancel amazon prime?
Google is your friend:

To end your Amazon Prime membership:

  1. Go to your Prime membership.
  2. Select Update, Cancel, and more, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Our Amazon delivery are within 24 hours. Amazon built a huge warehouse campus in Suffolk, VA a few years ago.

I sometimes wonder if we’re talking about the same company or if location matters or just differing expectations. We’ve been Amazon Prime members almost since it started and we order a lot, at least weekly and sometimes multiple times weekly. We’ve never had any problem returning anything and there have been several times when they have refunded the money without requiring a return. Over the years, our shipping time has been reduced from several days to now we get almost everything next day. We have always lived in close proximity, 20-30 miles, from an Amazon distribution center, so that might explain the short delivery times for us. A handful of times over the years when we have mistakenly ordered something that wasn’t prime and came from a vendor partner rather than Amazon itself, it has taken a few weeks. Usually, when we realized the shipping time, we cancelled those orders without any problem.

The biggest problem I ever had with them was when I ordered an item as a xmas present for my wife. They sent me the wrong item, twice. After the second time, I returned the wrong one again and ordered a different item.

If ordering online, we use Amazon. If shopping in store, we go to Costco. We get great service from both.

We have had good consistent service with Amazon Prime. Luckily for us because we don't have a lot of options here on Molokai. :D

I usually compare Amazon, Walmart & Best Buy prices.
DW likes Amazon Prime for their movies.
This, I expect we will be Prime members indefinitely.

I just ordered some products on Amazon. One item in particular (a round mirror) was $75 on Home Depot, $49 on Amazon - same manufacturer and item number. So weird, but obviously I ordered it from Amazon. I also use Rakuten and it will tell you if something is less expensive on WalMart for example. Only one of the 5 items in my cart was less expensive - but only because Rakuten was offering 3% cash back if I ordered on WM through them. They didn't have the other items that I was ordering, so I just passed on the small "savings".

For comparison, we have a Amazon distribution center about 5 miles from our house. The most common items arrive in about 6-8 hours (free if over $25, $3 otherwise.)

We also have an amazon distribution center close by. But, we cancelled our Amazon service last month. Decided $139 a year just wasn’t worth it to us. We still order items from them and usually get them delivered free in a few days max. I am a shopper so I google the item I am in need of and then usually order from the provider with the best price. Could sometimes be Amazon or Walmart, etc, etc. I don’t let my lofty expectations get in the way of my wallet.

Boy, I sure don't understand this! It's still free to return (to Kohl's, where they give you a 25% off coupon, or $1 via UPS) for 30 days, and they usually bend the 30-day rule when asked (we do buy a lot from them). Customer Service is almost all by chat, but it's prompt and helpful. Returns are credited the same day I take them to Kohl's/UPS, often within two hours. How could this get any better?

We don't live particularly near a distribution center, but most stuff arrives withing two days, a few items in less than one. I usually batch things into "Prime Day" to reduce transportation, and sometimes that earns a small credit for digital purchases. Occasionally delivery is three days, and less often than that it's "delayed."

I think Amazon's pricing is not as good as others for low-cost, lightweight items. Walmart wants to charge for delivery unless I buy $35 or join their club too (not gonna, Costco and Sam's and Amazon is my limit), so I order for free store pickup when I can. The goal for me is to avoid driving to multiple places to look for something I'm not sure about: I like being able to have it arrive on my doorstep and return if I don't like it.

Oh, I'm sure it's location specific. I just am an an Amazon "don't want to ship there" area, which they used to cover very well via UPS. UPS has quick delivery here, but Amazon wants to use their own trucks, but doesn't send them here. Walmart / Sams use FedEx, which also has good coverage here and quick delivery. I honestly think now what I end up waiting for is Amazon to bulk send their "dregs" out to UPS or USPS, which is why it takes them so long to ship. It's not the delivery service usually, it's Amazon doesn't send a shipping notice for a week. Walmart and Sams ship immediately, and I get it much faster. eBay ships 2-4 days and I get it about the same time as Amazon even with ebay using USPS, just because they ship 2-5 days sooner than Amazon.

Amazon Prime membership is the easiest of all subscriptions I have to justify. The value is huge.

1. Amazon Prime free shipping. As with others, I receive most items next day, sometimes two days, and sometimes it does take longer. Occasionally I’ll select their “no-rush” shipping option which includes $1 (or more) toward digital products, and since I buy Kindle books this is a direct savings.

2. The prices are typically very competitive for those I buy. I do price check against other vendors on occasion. I often will buy “used - like new” items for substantial savings and I’ve always been pleased with the quality. This is great for shoes I monitor since they often have them for ~$40-60 less than new, and I can’t tell they’ve ever been worn.

3. Amazon Prime Video. I enjoy some of their original series, and occasionally watch a movie or two. Since I pay ~$5-20 for other streaming services, I figure this is worth at least $5/mth and perhaps more.

4. Grocery discounts. I shop at Amazon Fresh and in addition to very competitive prices, I enjoy the convenience of simply taking items off the shelves and put immediately into bags and then walk out when done without taking the time for scanning and paying at a register. And Amazon Fresh will accept any returns to Amazon in person without needing to put in a box, which is nice.

5. I haven’t used it yet, but I’m sure I will soon.. Amazon now includes a membership to Grubhub+. I still have a subscription to UberOne, which I may cancel since I haven’t noticed the promised savings on rides compared to Lyft but I have enjoyed UberEats on occasion (and they keep offering me 50% coupons, up to $15, with only a $25 purchase… it’s often less expensive to have the order delivered than picking it up in person).

6. I haven’t used AmazonRx for prescription meds, but the prices are good and it’s nice to know that option exists.

7. Amazon Prime Reading offers eBooks at no additional charge.

There’s a lot more to Amazon than just shipping these days, and many ways to justify the $139 annual charge.

We found that the annual cost of one of DW's drugs was less when
bought thru Amazon than thru her Medicare prescription plan.

A neighbor clued me into this: For any drug with a significant cost
under your prescription plan, check it's GoodRx and Amazon price.

We have both Walmart+ and Amazon Prime and find them both worthwhile. But we do end up buying a lot more on Walmart+ due to their grocery delivery service being so much better, at least where we live.

For other household goods and services, we find them about equal overall. Amazon used to have the huge edge there but it's funny we end up watching Paramount+ via Walmart+ about as much as we watch Amazon Prime Video lately for some reason. Probably because I got hooked on Air Disasters.
