"Amazon today provided new information about robots working inside of its facilities. The ecommerce company now has 30,000 Kiva robots working in its fulfillment centers, an executive said during Amazon’s quarterly call with investors today.

That number is up from 15,000 at the end of 2014, said the executive, Phil Hardin, Amazon’s director of investor relations..."

Isn't it wonderful? Non-college, good, honest work in warehouses is now being taken over by machines! We should all celebrate the loss of these jobs. NOT.

Sorry, but I can't rejoice in this. But then, I'm the one who won't use the self=checkout in the grocery store because it kills jobs. I don't work any more, but it bothers me.

Don't see prices going down with these "labor saving devices" which don't have to be paid salaries or benefits.

I often don't use self-checkout either. But that's because my experience is that the cashiers often do a better job. Invariably I have some issue (alcohol purchase, coupon, etc) and have to involve the attendant so it never saves me any time and winds up just being a hassle to use self-checkout.

But I wouldn't trade efficiency to save jobs. I'd rather have a more civilized college and welfare system than hold onto old fashioned systems just for the sake of "jobs." Would you pay to have people dig and then fill up holes, too? There's a point where "jobs" isn't a good enough reason for inefficiency.

Of course. But, trying to stop progress in the form of efficiency is, if history any guide, a waste of effort. It would be better to instead support education programs so that those who are inevitably displaced may obtain another opportunity which hopefully includes a higher salary.

Look how robots have drastically increased the quality of autos today.

Isn't Amazon the one with the mass of upset employees? So far as I know, robots don't gripe. Easier to train, no bathroom breaks or sick time.

Some of it is supply and demand, too, as people get more and more demanding about ordering a 4pk of TP to show up this evening, robots are the most efficient way to fill the order.

Automation is also eliminating many dangerous occupations, thus reducing serious injuries and deaths.
