Already booked with II, want to change weeks

I have Christmas week at Newport Coast Villas with II. My wife wants to change our plans and go somewhere in the area a week (Arizona or So. Cal) later during New Years. I'm wondering what my options are.

1) Would I be able to simply cancel this week with II.
2) I suppose I could look for somthing during New Years but the odds are probably not great of getting something suitable and change.
3) Is there a way to find another Marriott owner who has a week at New Years and perhaps trade weeks. I imagine I would be able to put them on a guest certificate. Is this something that people do when they've already booked through II and want to change?

Any suggestions on what to do?

answers to 1, 2, and 3

1) sure, you can cancell your trade. You lose the exchange fee and receive a new week called a "cancellation replacement week". It will still have the Marriott priority, but will have less trading power. If you cancel it within flexchange, you will only ever be able to use it during flexchange. You only have a year from the cancellation date to exchange and travel.

2) you can get any other week instead of your trade that is available on line and would be eligible for trade for the originally deposited week. Again you pay another exchange fee. If there is something out there that fits your need on line, simply call II and they will complete the "re-trade". You can only do a re-trade once with your week.

3) I'll leave it up to others regarding direct exchange, etc. I don't have experience doing such exchanges.

I generally agree with Matt, except that the replacement week will not have the Marriott priority. It is treated as a generic week - not a Marriott week - but should have enough power to draw Marriott weeks that are still available after the 24-day priority period ends. Craig Urbine, an II VP when he was II's official rep to TUG, addressed this issue several times here at TUG.

Finding another Marriott owner willing to exchange with you for something suitable is a real long shot, particularly since it's likely that most people are happy with their current plans for Christmas week. I would bet against success.

When I had to cancel our NCV week this summer, only 2 weeks before check-in, I was given a replacement week.

I recall seeing it online as a Newport week with the five star emblem. And I could only book 30 days out. Luckily, I found NCV for Labor Day and used it then.

The 30-day limit on booking your replacement week stay was related to how close to your exchange date you canceled. For a cancellation at least 60 days before check-in, the replacement exchange can be confirmed at any time. For a cancellation 59 days to 14 days before check-in, the replacement exchange can be confirmed only within 59 days of the new exchange check-in date. For a cancellation 13 days to seven days before check-in, the replacement exchange can be confirmed only within 30 days of the new exchange check-in date.

I recall that there is a website for Marriott owners to exchange among themselved but I can't recall what it is. I think there is a $10 fee or something of the like. Can somewhere remind me how to get there?

If your week was booked with II, I don't think you are allowed to exchange it with another Marriott owner. It's an II exchange week and their rules apply.

I know you can't rent the week, but if you and another II member (it doesn't have to be a Marriott owner) want to obtain guest certificates for each other with no additional cost- then I'm not sure about this.

Dave?

The site is www.ownertrades.com . The site is owned by a TUGger. I don't know how much success people have had.

Good point. From II's T&C (bold emphasis added):
Members are expressly prohibited from exchanging or renting the Host Accommodations.
"Host Accommodations" include all weeks obtained through II:
...‘‘Host Accommodations’’ means the resort into which the Individual Member has been issued a Confirmation (including Flexchange and Getaway confirmations).

Thanks Dave!! I knew you'd know the answer to that. I was curious whether the rule applied to exchanges as well as rentals.
