I am just starting to see information on the Aloha Safe App. I'm not sure if it's something that would be helpful or not. We are registered on the Hawaii Safe Travels site for our upcoming trip. I'm not sure if we need the Aloha Safe App as well. Does anyone have experience with this?

We were just talking about this topic this morning with a friend. Our friend has it on his phone, and was notified last week about possible exposure to Covid when a friend of his tested positive. Our friend has tested negative twice, so is likely not infected.

If you happen to have an iPhone, you can find the feature built in, under "Emergency Notifications" in Settings. There may be something similar available in Android phones.

I found a little bit more information on the United Airlines website. It says there is you are entering Maui County it's required for you to have the app. However, how anyone would know if you had it I'm not sure. It sounds like what it's purpose is is to notify you if you have been exposed to Covid. I have an android phone and I could find the app (haven't downloaded it yet) in the Play Store. I don't see an Emergency Notifications in the Settings.

It was required when I went to Maui in August. I did have it on my IPhone but no one ever asked to verify that I had it.

We only used the Safe Travels app to get a qr code. We received the green wrist band at the departing airport. The first resort had called to let us know to keep this wrist band on until check in. I think the check in requirement has changed because when we switched resorts all they asked for was ID and credit card.

Were you going to Maui County? Sounds like that is where the Aloha Safe App is required? But like Slip said, no one asked for proof that he had it.

I went into Google Play and found it. I don't have it on my Samsung yet.

Sounds like it is used for contact tracing?

Yep, that is what I found in the Play Store. I will wait to install it closer to our trip. Now, just hope I remember to do it. :p

I just installed it. It's pretty much the same as the Apple version.

I just found that Hawaii Safe Travels has an app as well. Is it worth downloading that?

I don't have that since we don't have to use Safe Travels for inter-island. We haven't been to the mainland in a few years.

There is an independent app called Safe Travels, but it has nothing to do with the Hawaii Safe Travels program. Hawaii.gov also has an app, but that is not Safe Travels.

Thanks.

I deactivated it on my iPhone. it sucks battery juice because it’s always looking for others with the app running that are near you. Remember that this was developed a while back when about all we had was contact tracing. Not sure how relevant it is today.

I still have CA notify running on my Android phone. I have not noticed excessive battery drain. There are number state apps that are compatible with the Aloha Safe, the website lists which state databases connect. The California definitely works with the Aloha Safe database.

However similar to what others reported, nobody actually checked that we had this installed when we visited Maui early in 2021. In the 18 months or so its been active my phone, its never received an alert. I agree with csodjd, it probably not that relevant today. But I not going to tell you break the rules..

Thought about extending this trip to include Maui but we need to go home to make an appearance and get ready for a Mexico trip. If I would have thought to have grabbed our passports I think we could have just flown to Mexico from here.

Well, add to that the fact that unlike early on, with Omicron we’re probably ALL going to have exposure sooner or later, probably sooner. You don’t really even need the app to tell you, you can just assume it and take the best precautions you can take. Mask when near others. Vaccine/boost. Be aware of what the symptoms are and don’t ignore when you get them, and act responsibly if/when you do. If you are at risk or not vaccinated, be more aggressive in seeking care early if you get symptoms (especially when the pills become widely available in the coming weeks). I think that’s more or less the “daily protocol” for all of us in 2022.

Minnesota has a similar app, but the state doesn't promote it. If 90% of the people don't know it exists, it's useless.
