We flew Alaska to Mexico and got to talking to a passenger about mile cards. She said she used the Alaska Platinum and purchased a companion flight for $50 plus taxes.

Does anyone have this program? We are in Canada and they do offer it. I think the annual fee is $200 usd which is a little pricey. Add the $200 to the $50 and you really aren't saving a whole lot.

I'd like to hear the pros and cons.

Gracias
Diane

As a Platinum cardholder, you would receive a certificate each year, which is redeemable for a companion ticket. The paid ticket must be on a published fare. In addition to paying $50 for the companion ticket, you'll also pay for travel into the U.S. the Federal segment tax (up to $3 per segment), the 9/11 Security Fee (up to $10), and the U.S. immigration fee ($6). If you are traveling to Mexico, the ticket may be subject to departure, transportation and Mexico visitors’ taxes of up to $78. Only the cardholder can redeem the certificate.

You can read about other aspects of the card here.

I thought I only pay $75 per year. The total companion fare YYC/MZT was $152.91 with everything. That was for a first class fare or the cheapest available fare - your choice. Considering the double miles for AS ticket purchases, the Boardroom passes, and the companion certs, which unlike most are not limited to full fare, this Visa is a GREAT deal (IMHO).

This card is a GREAT deal but the annual charge is only $75 US.

We have the Signature card & I was surprised to see the $200 fee. I don't think we would have the card if we had to pay $200.

I did notice that the only card offered in Canada was the Platinum.

Not sure the $50 voucher is worth $200, but that's a personal choice.

Btw, it's much easier to use the voucher now that they put it online as an e-coupon.

I'm not sure where Diane found the $200 number, but the online application form states that the annual fee for the Platinum card is "only" $75.

I don't know where I found it either! I think maybe thats what the person told me on the flight.

I too looked it up and found it to be $75. I like the idea that it and all other charges are in Canadian.

We were really impressed with Alaska Air too.

Its too bad that they don't offer travel insurance though. Our MBO card does and the insurance was alot less than others were charging.
