Closest airport is AVL - Asheville/Hendersonville (NC), 45-50 min. drive
GSP - Greenville/Spartenburg (SC), 1-1.5 hrs drive
CLT - Charlotte (NC), 2 hrs drive
TRI - Johnson City (TN), 3 hrs drive
TYS - Knoxville (TN), 3.5 hrs drive
ATL - Atlanta (GA), 4-4.5 hrs drive, add more if rush hour.
If you'd like to fly into AVL, Delta/Northwest and US Air usually have the best fares. Airtran is opening a new route between AVL and Orlando in June with cheap webfares so if you don't mind the out-of-the-way stop, they may have a decent fare. GSP and CLT are often as cheap as Atlanta - check Allegiant Air, Continental, AirTran, Delta or US Air.
The roads are windy in Lake Lure so the driving can be tiring if you're not used to that. Consequently, I'd personally prefer a shorter drive once you get to the Carolinas, rather than the longer drive with crazy city traffic through Atlanta. The ATL airport is south of the city to you'd need to drive through the city to get to the Carolinas. HTH.
