We just bought them for my SO- specifically for restaurant use…
His phonak HA is useless in restaurant situations no way he get rid of enough background use and the table top microphone to match his device are ridiculously cost prohibitive for experimenting.
Supposed to be an AirPod/iPhone feature that works the same way…haven’t figured it out yet.
Have you tried that feature?
We were able to figure out it works well with the bedroom AppleTV set top box..
Within the settings feature of the Airpods there is something called "Conversation Awareness". This says "Lowers media volume and reduces background noise when you start speaking to other people".

There is also something called "Live Listen"

Pros and Cons Of the AirPods Hearing Aids

https://www.wsj.com/tech/personal-tech/apple-airpod-hearing-aids-pros-cons-6871d52a

"Are Apple’s $249 AirPods hearing aids too good to be true? It depends whom you ask

"Longtime Apple fan Mike Dirksen was so eager to use the AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids that he bought two pairs. For a month, the 83-year-old from Napa County, Calif., wore them constantly. “I found them to be on the low side of adequate for my needs,” he says. They made high frequencies louder but not low frequencies, and they weren’t very good for speech clarity. “Everything was a little bit louder than it had been before.” He settled on a $2,000 pair of Jabra hearing aids, which are compatible with his iPhone and could be controlled with a wider range of custom settings. “Immediately, my hearing was vastly improved, which was a complete surprise to me,” he says.
