Hi,

I'm caught up in a sales meeting in San Fran this week but have Sunday off. We were thinking of renting a car and driving north to get lost and explore....

Are there any recommendations on places to see, roads to take, lunch spots, etc?

Thanks!!
LAR

Went to Muir Woods last May on Cal trip. Well worth the visit. It is beautiful.

How far do you want to go??

Muir Woods is a good suggestion. Mt. Tamalpais is nice, especially if you want to do some easy hiking (weather permitting). The Napa and Sonoma Valleys are nice - wineries.

Pt. Reyes and Stinson Beach are nice if the weather is good. In foul weather Point Reyes can be nasty because it's exposed to the open ocean on three sides.

****

If the weather is bad, I would probably just do wineries. If the weather is nice, I would probably cross the GG Bridge, then follow Hwy 1 north along the coast far as far as you like, and stopping to take in whatever you like.

With the weekend of storms the weather folks are predicting this might be a real possibility.

That said, I like the Santa Rosa / Russian River area. Lots of wineries and eateries along the way. Less crowded than Napa. Easy access due North on 101, the West on the River road.

Pt Reyes was one of my favorites when I lived out on the left coast. Loved the pounding surf.

Cheers

The big storm has hit CA and we are having high winds and LOTS of rain. We are going to have to empty water out of our pool today, because it has risen several inches. There are supposed to be 3 big storms in a row coming in. I would not want to drive along the coast in this weather. Actually, I am not driving today at all - it's miserable out there!

Weather warnings as fierce storms pummel Bay Area

"The first of three major storms bearing down on California swept into the state Thursday, bringing drenching rain to the Bay Area and life-threatening dangers from the Sierra to Southern California.

The weather could get nasty no matter where you live, emergency officials warned. Forecasters said Bay Area residents should brace for possible coastal flooding, high winds and huge surf, and officials in several cities handed out free sandbags Wednesday."

Yep, our weather is fierce today. I'm hoping it calms down by Sunday though, as younger dd is supposed to fly out of SFO back to school.

If the weather is horrible and you don't want to drive out of the city, think of going to the Cliff House and parking yourself there (I think you can still get a table or sit in the bar and have a view of the ocean). You can watch the waves pounding on the rocks and shore.

We did a nice and easy day drive up to Napa last week from San Francisco.

Though it was cool and misty it was still a nice drive and still pretty.

On a normal weekend it would be wonderful. But, with the weather we're having right now! Heard several of the bridges are either closed, closing, or under high wind advisory. Part of highway 101 have been closed off and on, and there is always the potential of flooding in some of those areas. It will probably be touch and go as to what the weather will be like by Sunday.

The weather report is nice to hear since it will mean more Champagne Powder for Steamboat Springs. An Ill Wind does blow some people good. :D

Sorry for the West Coast but I am looking forward to the results in a few days up in the Rockies. ;)

Cheers

be careful if you head toward the valleys

My sister lives in Capay, near Davis. They had major winds today that snapped power lines and flooding rains.

She owns and runs several horse boarding facilities. This afternoon the wind blew the roof off of a house on her property, spooked a horse in one of the barns who then ran into a wall and died of a broken neck!!! The Highway Patrol turned her back twice because of downed lines and flooding before she could finally get to the barns to help her staff.

Still no power.

Very sad and still dangerous.

thoghts on north of SF

Hi, we really enjoyed day trips to Pt Reyes and saw lots of seals and wow did the fog come in fast !! We also got to go to Muir Woods which was lovely and also Sausilito... loved the area.. the wineries are also nice to see. THere is a train that rides through the Napa valley area... lots to see and choose from.. depending on your interests... have fun !:)

It looks like this is not the weekend to go exploring. Most of the bridges were closed, at least for a portion of the day yesterday, much flooding, debries in the roads, and just terrible driving conditions over all. Most everyone I know is sticking very close to home. I left work at 2 p.m. yesterday when dh called to let me know that the roads were flooding and "stuff" was coming down out of the trees.

This would be a good day to visit on of SF's many fine museums.
