ADA Compliance

Are timeshares not required to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act? I was at a resort last year that did not, which I found unusual. Now I just read a posting in a Facebook group that another resort in North Carolina doesn't comply either. I would hate to be a disabled person that made a reservation assuming they had to comply only to find upon arriving they do not.

I think they must have SOME units (and access to those units) that are ADA-compliant. For instance, last year my in-laws went to Festiva Resort near Orlando. My mother-in-law had trouble walking stairs, but their unit was on the 2nd floor. Their unit was obviously NOT ADA-compliant, but they could not tell if there were ones that were. As a side note, my mother-in-law died about 2 weeks ago. My wife is going to help her dad divest her accounts as well as working on returning or giving away their timeshare portfolio (and cancel a scam timeshare exit company who took thousands and that promises 100% money back).

I don't think there is any exclusion for timeshares, however not ALL units must be compliant. If one needs a handicap unit they should communicate this need early with the resort. ADA compliance outside the U.S. can be spotty as the the act is the AMERICANS with DISABILITIES Act. An aside- cruise ships have a limited number of handicap accessible cabins. They often are held until the last minute before being released to able bodied passengers. Wider hallways, roll-in showers- proximity to elevators differentiate them.

It's also possible that the facility pre-dates the law, in which case the requirements are different.
