I have a reservation at the Mayan Palace in Acapulco for Dec. 29-Jan. 5 for my husband and me. I have a couple of questions regarding our trip:

1. Airfare from San Diego is much higher than I expected (over $500) for really inconvenient times. We flew to Puerto Vallarta for much less last year during the same time period. I know airfare has gone up, but I didn't realize it would almost be double to Acapulco. Do you think airfare will go down--or at least will more options be forthcoming?

2. I found one non-stop from LAX to Acapulco departing on Dec. 28 and returning Jan. 6. If we take this flight, we'll need to spend one night in a hotel on either end of the trip. Do you all have recommendations for a safe and reasonably priced hotel I could reserve for those two nights?

Thanks!

I think that LAX has non-stop air now into Acapulco. No, the price will not be coming down, based on my experience. This will be our 6th year in a row to spend the holidays at the MP. I fly out of Houston. I bought our tickets in the spring for about the same money as last year. I was very happy about that.

That is the HIGH, HIGH season in Acapulco. Don't know what you'll be able to find at this date. Be prepared to spend around $300 for one night. There will not be any empty hotel rooms either, as everyone and their dog comes down from Mexico City. It is wall-to-wall people! But New Year's Eve in Acapulco is something else! The fireworks in the city along the bay are quite beautiful! The MP will be packed. Everyone that owns a villa or condo will be there, and they have access to the pool and all amenities.

We'll be there starting 12/25. We're staying at the MP, also. If I can help you, feel free to e-mail me. I've stayed at the MP probably close to 20 times, and been to ACA probably close to 30. I love it there! The weather will be perfect...like living in a picture post card from some tropical location.

BYW, how many people are in your party?

Monica,

Thanks for the info. Maybe we'll get a chance to meet up. Only my husband and I are planning to go at this time. I was going to bring my two daughters (ages 10 & 6), but with airfare so high, I think I'll leave them with the grandparents. They're not pleased about this! But over $2000 in airfare is just too much considering we just did Maui this summer and are planning to go to DC next summer.

What has really caught me off-guard, are the lack of reasonable flights (i.e. 1 or less stops) from Southern Calif. to Acapulco. Given that it's high season, I just thought there would be more flight availability.

Another theory I had was to fly into Mexico City and take a bus to Acapulco. I have a bunch of Starwood hotel points, and so I could book hotel rooms in Mexico City. It's a bummer that there is no Starwood hotel in Acapulco. Has anyone taken a bus from Mexico City to Acapulco--I'm up for a little adventure, but don't want to be too nutty.

This is actually a very good option for you... fly into Mexico City, and then go straight to Cuernavaca or Taxco on December 28 and spend a beautiful day there... Then go from Cuernavaca or Taxco to Acapulco... and then come back but stay in Cuernavaca, which is relatively close to Mexico City, and then back to Mexico City to catch your airplane.

Or spend your last day in Mexico City, so you get to the airport without missing your flight. I'm pretty sure but not certain that there are busses from Cuernavaca to Mexico City airport, too.

First class bus service is EXCELLENT from Mexico City to Cuernavaca or Taxco or to Acapulco... as good or better than Greyhound or Trailways in the U.S. It is not too nutty, in fact it is an excellent and very pleasant way to travel... it is about 1 hour to Cuernavaca, about 3 hours to Taxco, and about 5 hours to Acapulco, in very comfortable busses.

I can suggest several hotels in Cuernavaca but I know you will love "Las Mañanitas" or "Hotel Jacarandas"... I don't know where you could stay in Taxco, because I am not so familiar with hotels in Taxco... but there are very good hotels in Taxco... seek and ye shall find.

Ellis2ca,

Thanks for the advice. I did actually book the nonstop from LAX to Acapulco, but I may still take a bus trip--either on this visit or a future one--so I appreciate the information.

I did the same thing and arrived two days early and stayed at the Hyatt before going to the Mayan Palace. The Hyatt was fine and better than most hotels in Acapulco but I used my Hyatt points and stayed in their upgraded regency level. Acapulco hotels and mostly very old and probably 1-3 stars by US standards except for the Fairmont hotels which are pricey and near the Mayan Palace. I wanted to be close to downtown ACA for the two days and I would say the Hyatt was a good choice but it's about a 3 star hotel at best.

You will have a great time at the Mayan which is head and shoulders above any other resort in ACA. We are confirmed again at the Mayan Grand for January 2008 and can't wait to get back there. Also weather is fantastic in ACA. :hi:
