I watched this incredible movie for the first time in my life tonight. I predict parts will move you to tears.

The Hawaiians based on James Michner's books. MGM staring Charlton Heston and Geraldine Chaplin (as a Hawaiian no less). I wondered why casting couldn't spend 10 minutes on the beach and find a beautiful Hawaiian woman cause Geraldine sure didn't come across as remotely Hawaiian.

Anyway without giving the movie away, it starts with bringing Chinese and Japanese laborers over to work the fields, sugar cane and pineapple development, leprosy and Molokai, overthrow of the Monarchy, burning of Chinatown to control the plague, oriental values of the importance of the family over self, and ends up with the plague of time-shares infesting the islands.:D (just kidding on that last one)

One of the single best movies I've ever seen on the Islands. Right up there with South Pacific staring Mitzy Gaynor.

I hope you concur,

Sterling

I just used directv.com's online recording feature to add it to my DVR's schedule. I love modern technology.

Meanwhile, the listing says "The Hawaiians" is a sequel to 1966's "Hawaii." I don't see when that might be airing. Does anyone have any info on that?

OP - did you see both movies or just the sequel?

Of course, books are always better.

Of course books are better. It's just silly to sit on the sand at Polihale and look at a DVD player.

It's a great book/movie and although not accurately historical teaches you about a lot of flavor of Hawaii's history. It's loosly based on some of the first missionary families and you can visit their homes. One in Hanalei and one in Hilo. Both are very interesting. Also one might note that Michner loved Hawaii, met his Japanese origins wife there but left it never to return when they attempted to buy a home and there was a no Japanese codicile in the deed, that was enforcible at that time.

It is even foolish to watch a good movie about Hawaii because once you've seen it in person movies aren't even close to showing the real beauty of Hawaii.

But.............its been a long time since we've been there.
Please forgive me.
