About to be 50 - life feels different

I was 10 when my dad turned 50, and he said he was looking forward to it because at least for a year, it would be easy to remember how old he was. I thought that was silly - and then the year before I turned 50, I realized how right he was! For some reason, once I hit 30, I can never remember exactly how old I am - I always have to do the math. And for a whole year, I just knew the answer.

Now I'm looking to turning 60, for the same reason. Although I have to say I think this milestone birthday is going to be harder for me than any others. Maybe it's because I had my kids late in life, so I was more focused on raising them than worrying about what age I was. But I still don't feel old.

My kids were 8 and 7 (a year and a day apart) when I hit 50 it flew by me almost unnoticed and without ever thinking that I was passing a milestone. One of the advantages of my starting a family late is that I was so involved in school activities, coaching sports, etc (not to mention work) that I felt 25, not 50. I am 73 now, divorced and mostly hang with guys and girls in their late 20s or early 30s. Same result. I blew by 70 almost without knowing it. For me the secret seems to be surrounded by people much younger.

I hit 50 this summer. My kids are 7,9 and 20, so it was hard for me to believe I was that old. I also became a grandmother this year. So I laugh and call myself the world's youngest grandma. Luckily, good genes have fooled people into thinking I am still in my early 40's. And the young kids help.

50 is great. I have several times said to my husband and kids, "I am 50 now and I don't have to take that anymore." It is quite empowering. Enjoy it. It has been my best birthday, next to 21.

Joan...A grandmother at 50? I became a grandmother at the age of 39! I felt a bit discriminated against, since Liz Taylor got her picture on the cover of Life Magazine for the same thing. Humph! (Anybody remember Life Magazine? LOL!

My first child was born when I was 35 and my last when I was 39 (the last was adopted from China). How nice that you will be able to attend your grandchildren's weddings (I mean if they marry, if etc etc - but you know what i mean).

I turn 61 in February, I can't wait til I get to 62, hellooo Social Security. Retirement is something I am so looking forward to. So many places to go so little money, I mean time.:D :hysterical:

I remember how much the 50th birthday hit me. When I was in my 40s I always thought of myself as "middle aged", after all you double forty (I creatively rounded down on the "ones place") and you get eighty and LOTS of folks make it to 80. You double 50 and ... as Frank Barone would say HOLY CRAP!!! But.. once it had come and gone I just got used to it. I saw Ernest Borgnine in a movie clip asking a young guy "Do you know what it feels like to be 79?" The young guy said "No, of course no". Borgnine said "Yes you do. It'll feel just like you feel now." You ALWAYS feel like yourself (just with a few more aches and pains". As others have said "Getting old is no fun...but it beats the hell out of the only alternative!!!" .
