We will be staying in Newport Beach for a week in July and were wondering what is the best way to see the sights in L.A., organized tour or on our own? If a tour is recommended what company is good? I also thought it would be a nice idea to try to see a show being taped for television. I don't know where to look to get tickets or if they are even being taped in the summer or not. Any help with this part would be appreciated also.
We will be in L.A. for a day before continueing onto Hawaii and than returning for the portion of our trip in Newport Beach. What would be recommended to do for that one day? It looks like we will be staying at a hotel located near the airport but renting a car for the day is not out of the question.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

TV show taping tickets are free, and sometimes paid to get an audience, however nore are issued than there is capacity, so be prepared to be turned away in the event every one shows up

A cat (CAR) will be a necesissty, you won't be that far while you are in NPB so don't try to see it all in one day

If by the airpost you mean LAX, then the one thing to do near the airport is the Getty Museum. It a few miles north of LAX just off I-405. Also in the hills above LA is the Griffith Observatory. It an OK drive from the LAX area. And Universal Studios is there too.

If you are flying from another airport these may not be as good of ideas.

If you decide to visit Universal City Studios, there are often a number of buses at the end of the day, waiting at the front entrance to take people to show tapings. Also, they hand tickets for tapings out at the Venice Boardwalk during the day. I think that the Los Angeles Visitor's Bureau also has them available. And I remember once riding by a place where people were waiting in line to board buses to the more popular tapings.
Just remember, as people above had said, they give out more tickets than there are spots, so you might go to one of the more popular tapings and get turned away, only to be offered the option of sitting in the audience for a new, untested and unknown show.

One year we were invited at Venice Beach. We seemed to be among the last to get in. I was told later that people who make reservations off the web get a higher priority as they are more likely to appear than just a random invite at the beach.

I haven't gone again to confirm this theory but here are a few links so you can test this theory for all of us...

all ABC shows

all NBC shows

the tonight show(Leno), note these must be done via mail in advance

Letterman show

Now that all my links are in one spot maybe I'll use 'em myself next year!

I currently work with Warner Brothers and we recommend people go to: www.tvtickets.com for their free tix.

But as others have said, a ticket in hand is not a guarantee of a seat in the studio.

I believe you need to make some sort of reservation at the Getty Museum, it may be more of a parking issue than anything else.

On a clear day, the view from the Getty is fabulous. I'd do an early day tour and lunch at the getty and TV later in the day.
