They can put your name in when they sign up. Most on FB don't know my TUG username and vice versa but they can put in your name and it will link up

I think the referal match is something Brian does manually when there is a referral for a new member. So if they use your real name (that you signed up on TUG with) or your BBS username he should be able to match it up. I know most of my referrals came from my YouTube channel and the people signing up just used my YouTube channel name as their referral.

How do referrals work? I can't remember from when I signed up; is there a block to put in the username of the referring person during the process?

yes, there is a field when creating a new tug membership that asks if anyone referred you and who. sometimes we get full names, other times we get forum usernames. either will work!
