We just completed our first stay at Kingsland after a number at Bay Club and Kohala. We had wandered around Kingsland several times, but never actually stayed. Here I will give a review of our stay at Kingsland along with a comparison against the other two non-hotel, i.e. not Ocean Tower, properties as we've not stayed there and that one is more different :)

I'd always thought of Kingsland as too big and sprawling and staying there confirmed that to me. Don't get me wrong, we love walking around. We walked down to HWV I think three different times despite having a car and free parking, and walked all the way around the loop to get back. I just don't need/want my resort to be so spread out. it adds no benefit.

Check-in: This was not handled well. Covid probably played a part in some of it, of course. No room ready when we got there at 11AM. We've had mixed results at the Kohala/Bay Club complex, so this was not very different. However, when we went back to check again at maybe 3PM after getting groceries (to see if we needed to have them store the stuff), it was a long-line zoo. Got to the desk and "yes, it's ready. You should have received a text." Uh, no...got the text after we got the keys :). So that was a FAIL compared to the other properties since they just have less going on. I'll note that, when we got to the room, the dishwasher was still going with about 1 hour left. I consider this a positive as they got us into the room before things were complete done rather than making us wait for that and that was much preferred.

Location: We stayed in a first floor 1BR unit in Building 3. Location was superb, right across from the Serenity Pool. I highly recommend this part of the world. My thought was "this is like being at Bay Club, right near the quiet pool." So, to us, the best part of Kingsland was the part like the other property. We ate every breakfast and 4 of 5 dinners on the lanai and that was lovely.

Room: Standard 1BR, not too different from the other properties, although it did seem fresher in terms of condition. Huge (really more than needed) bathroom with a tub reminiscent of W. 57th that they could have lost and made the bathroom smaller in favor of the bedroom. All of the cookware we needed was there, as expected and matching the other complex.

Cooking facilities: We did 4 of 5 meals in the room on the grill (the 5th was the early Kama'aina at Sansei) and the grills were plentiful (at least 1 per building in the area) and very nice. One near us was a bit wonky, but that could happen anywhere. Making dinner and sitting on the lanai with wine in the evening was, to us, far superior to going out. We've done this at the other complex and it is similar. The immediate location here made this just a tad better.

On-site food and beverage: This is where Kingsland falls short in a big way. For this huge complex there is one bar. It is nice, but insufficient. The other complex, being smaller, has 2 (the Bay Club location is being refurbed now, but that's temporary). This is a big Fail for KL. Also, it closed at 6 daily...and one day was not open at all. This was completely lame. No Happy Hour (Kohala had theirs), but a $10 glass that reduced all cocktails by $4, so maybe a wash. This was a big gap.

Pools; The Serenity Pool was great. Posted hours 8AM - 8PM but one can open the door by reaching over, so we'd be in by 7:15 or so some mornings after running. We're very quiet at those times so don't disturb anyone. Even staff who came by and saw us were OK with it. Didn't think we'd care for the Super Pool and we didn't really use it. But we did very much enjoy the hot tub at the Adult Pool section (if you've stayed there, you know the one). Went there every evening and met different interesting people each time. This was a highlight because we had so many different conversations with interesting people. Talked up RESALE quite a bit :)

The one bit of magic here was the folks who had gone out fishing, caught a mahi and didn't eat fish! Well, two large mahi filters later and we never did make it to Da Fish House up the coast. Grilled mahi one eve and mahi tacos another.

The pools at the other complex are nice, and we very much like the Bay Club pool. But KL is the clear winner here, even for those without kids who don't want most of the Super Pool.

Cheers.

Shadow: So, the neighbors had fed the local cat one morning. This is part of the registered feral colony and they are fed/cared for by the property. But we had way more mahi than we wanted, so Shadow (that's what we called the cat who was midnight black) got a small treat each of our mornings. We had never done this at the other property and it was a nice feeling.

Resort location: There is nothing interesting or convenient about the location of KL. Thye surroundings are completely uninteresting. The other complex has more vegetation and interest in the surrounding sreas and is more convenient to HWV and slightly more so to Queens' and Kings' as we often walk there. Definite drawback here.

Overall: KL wins on pools and, with the right specific location, it can be great. Overall, though, too big with no advantages to such. Loss on location and definite loss on Beverage availability. Were it not for the Adult Pool area and hot tub and the particularly nice location of our building and room, I'd say that KL has nothing really to offer over Kohala/Bay Club, especially at the higher point premium, At least for folks without kids who don't want/need the Super Pool full of kids.

Cheers.

That is why Bay Club is my first choice unless Pools are super important, then I would pick KL.

Can you elaborate? Does adult mean clothing optional?

That would be interesting, but no :) It's actually in the same enclosure as the Super Pool, just a different section. It's just signed as 'Adult Pool."

I might pick Kohala for the HWV access since we do like the lagoon pool and, while we could use it without official access, getting a towel is handy.

Cheers.

As as Elite I get HWV pool access anyway, I just rarely use it.

Last time we did use the HWV pools, some kid crapped it in and that entire pool complex (big one with the waterfalls) had to be closed to de-contaminate it.That just gross me out.

We only use the lagoon pool. Plenty of crap in there already so not a problem :)

For us, rather stay at Kohala than pay for Elite :)

Cheers.

This happens way too often, and it's one reason we prefer the KL adults only section. I have no problem running off kids that try to come over, or adults with babies in those gross swim diapers. Most families are considerate and prefer the sand beach pool.

OP was lucky the hot tubs were available, the ones over here at HHV are all drained and closed.

Got my Elite via a resale week, so I am not complaining.

Anyone know what happened to dvd now kiosks at KL?

I don't have direct knowledge, but i would guess the same that happened to Blockbuster, most people have move on to streaming. Believe the TV's are now smart and you can log into your favorite streaming service...

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that in the review. KL does not have DVD players or DVDs available. They still have them at the other complex.

And, yes, the TVs at KL will connect to Netflix, Prime at the least (these are the ones we have). I'm assuming that Kohala/Bay Club do as well. So this is a negative for KL relative to the others.

Cheers.

Adult means quiet. No kids splashing and screaming. Adults around the pool are reading books or relaxing in a quiet atmosphere. All fully clothed!

Great to read, thank you. I'll be heading there soon with stays at Ocean Tower, Kingsland, and Bay Club (I'm going for 3 weeks over Xmas/NY so I was forced to piecemeal it a bit). I actually own at Bay Club, but looking forward to checking them all out (assuming ever-changing COVID restrictions don't get in the way).

Think I have only checked out a DVD at a timeshare a couple of times... We don't have a DVD player at home, so don't miss them in hotel or TS villas.

Since I plan to be at Kings Land next year, this is not a welcome change. I'm one of the perceived minority who still watches DVDs. I always take a TV series when staying in a timeshare, so I have something to watch in the evenings while catching up with emails and other business. I wonder if the staff kept some DVD players to fulfill requests.

Having lived in Hawaii and also having stayed at the HGVC's many times it is maddening to see visitors feed the feral cats. Please don't even though it makes most feel good.....they are considered an invasive species in Hawaii and are very damaging to the native bird life in Hawaii which is much more unique and native....

Thanks. Hadn't known that perspective. I actually had not planned to do this until I was told that they were cared for by the property, so already installed in the local landscape. I do see your point, but was working from a different set of assumptions based on what I was told. Thanks for the perspective. Basically, I believed I was doing it less as a visitor and more in support of local practices. Seems that perhaps not.

OTOH maybe, if we don't feed them, they'll eat the mongeese that have endangered the Nene by preying on their eggs...

Cheers.

Many of the feral colonies in the Waikaloa Beach resort, including the one at Kingsland are feed and supported by a local non-profit, A-Bay Kitties, My wife and I are frequent Big Island visitors, and cat lovers, this a one of several animal groups we support. They Trap, neuter and release the cats. When a feral cat is neutered, they clip the tip one of ear, so its easy to recognize if the cat has been part of the TNR program.

Are the discounted golf rates and free driving range only offered with Kingsland or is it available with Kohala and Bay CLub also?

Since neither of us have any interest in golfing, this is not an issue for us. Certainly someone else will know the answer, and it may matter to some.

cheers.

Circling back to the BRP's original review above.. We love Kingsland, but I agree with most of the observations. The check-in process has been a mess this year. In May, our room was not ready until well after 5pm, though they did provide vouchers for the bar while we waited. Our friends room was also ready late, and i have read numerous reports both her and on FB about the Kingsland check-in process having issues this year.

As for the room available text messaging, in my experience with both hotels and timeshares, in seems to fail more than it actually notifies me when my room is ready...

I agree the Pool Bar was miss this year, it did not have the same vibe as previous years, no happy hour or discount glasses available.. Of course we had also spent the prior week at Ocean Tower, and the only bar at the whole HWV complex was the pool bar.. and one place to eat... Think they have opened up more by now..

The new Innspire system stinks!!! Three visits from maintenance to reset the system in the main room of a 1BR, and still a slow system, with lots of little things you have to do to make it work. Replaced our remote as well, still not a full fix, and I think Hgvc did not install the receiver correctly since we had to point at the ceiling to have the remote work. We are phone Android users with one year old fully updated phones, and Innspire Connect My Phone (on the main screen) does not work. The Innspire HDMI Chromecast feature is glitchy, we were able to Cast about 80 percent of the time, but weird drops happened. Fortunately Hawaii keeps you busy enough for limited TV... Hoping they don't put this crap system anywhere else.

Does anyone know if it's possible to connect a Roku to the TV? Since neither of my streaming services will be available on the TV and DVD players are no longer available, I'd like to be able to watch something in the evenings while I take care of business.

I thought checking in was officially at 4PM not 11AM or 3PM. So I don’t think that complaint is valid.
