A Chinese Tech Company Has Developed A Smartphone Battery That Charges to 50% in 5 Minutes - by Max Slater-Robins/ Tech/ Business Insider/ businessinsider.com

"Huawei, the Chinese smartphone giant, has developed a battery that can charge to 48% in around five minutes, the BBC reports.

Fast charging technology works by including sturdier components which can deal with a higher power input, according to Android Authority..."

All I have to say is they are a little late. My last phone a Note 2 had a battery that I could use all day for GPS, talking, checking email or whatever I needed and there was still battery left at the end of the day. My iPhone 6 Plus is even better. The big phones have much longer battery life. Some people are using smaller phones and maybe they need it. But the market is getting smaller and smaller.

This is not about a longer lasting battery (capacity), this is a more robust charging system that can recharge in 5 min (charge rate).

Along a similar line.... I know a lot of you are familiar with these, but we just got our first 6 Tesla 'Superchargers' for their cars. The station is located at a visitor's center overlooking the Snake river canyon with various shops and eateries nearby. So apparently one can plug in their car and *Poof* for free, 175 miles of charge in 30 minutes. A full charge of almost 300 miles worth in an hour. Heck, my phone would only catch about 20% charge in a half hour.

Agree, but my point is that more people are buying large phones and the need for a fast charge is getting smaller. That technology would have been great five years ago.

I was looking at BMW i3 recently. 55K with the extended battery, and it holds a gallon of gas, I think, for the backup engine.

I am very interested in electric, but two things need to happen:

1. Pricing more competitive with gas and hybrids. Doesn't have to be exactly the same price, but not 55K for a subcompact.

2. A 20 minute recharge that will get me 200 miles in mountain terrain, or barring that, at least enough gasoline capacity to finish the drive from Las Vegas to LA without stopping.

I think we're 5-10 years away.
